This is a sound vs content argument that either some of y'all don't understand or are purposely being obtuse to serve your own agendas.

Yes Clipse do drug dealer raps. Are they doing that in the same way that a YB or DLow do it, no. That's where them being authentic to themselves lie. They're not chasing the most current sound.

And that's not to say they wouldn't visit that world, but they wouldn't live there.

i honestly believe clipse's coke bars more than jay's :yeshrug:

drake was probably correct in his statement than he realizes though, i suspect both clipse and jay only sold what they had to, because if you had legit music money come in why would you fukk that up with drug money? cocaine is extremely lucrative especially in large amounts, you wouldn't have to do it forever. i could see them both washing their money and retiring, but that 'still spending money from 88' and '92 bricks' stuff is obvious bullshyt. if they were already millionaires why did they need a music career? if it was ONLY to rinse drug money, i dont think jay would've worked so hard on reasonable doubt.

im just speculating, i could be completely wrong. but i do notice these things

yeah.. but that doesnt necessarily make him a multi millionaire either. the whole history is weird. i just think jay exaggerated. that state street apartment would be ridiculous to rent now, but back in the early 90s it probably wasnt nearly as much. this is all based on speculation and pocket watching so ymmv

But it's authentic to who they are. They're drug dealing rappers. High living and drug dealing. That's been their mantra.

This is a nuance topic that I probably need more time to flesh out my opinion.
but its not 1997 anymore in 2026, and by all accounts these guys werent pablo escobar

tbh I dont mind clipse still rapping about that at all, I think its dope, I just dont think its a good example for jay

Well he said "I came in this motherfukker a hundred grand strong, nine to be exact from grinding g-packs" So, he didn't claim to be a millionaire before rap.

This was also a year before Reasonable Doubt dropped, paid for by them.
