I'm legit confused by posts like this.

To put it into perspective LL (who was on his 6th album) and Too Short (who was on his 10th album) both outsold "RD".

Jay went gold, same as Crucial Conflict. The popularity/sales/whatever on that Source list is all over the place.

Fred.
It wasn't in any order or based on sales/popularity... they would do these every year, just usually including the albums they felt were the best of that timeframe.

Breh sit this one out. You getting emotional like two females.

You talking about a single being on your city's radio.

First of all rap didn't play all day, so miss me with that. In 1996 radio stations were not blasting rap music all day and all night like that. AM stations in majority of the cities around the world had special hrs to play RAP SONGS.
You had special hrs that rap came on and it was more at night for a certain time frame. Maybe an hr or 2 hr cap.
And before you say that I'm lying, who was listening to the shyt on the radio all day? Everybody was in fukkin school until 3-4 pm and nikkas wasn't listening to the shyt at school. No Cell Phones or shyt we have today nikka.
Radio wasn't waisting money on playing rap music ALL Day.

You had a handful of artist who shyt would be played all day in the day which was a rare instinct, such as your 2pac but you had to wait for a mix in the evening or a countdown at night to hear rap songs

Nobody was playing fukking Jay Z all the time on their radio station across the country.
In Detroit in 1996 we had 2 stations WJLB FM 98 and 105.9 Jamz that played rap and r&b all day

That was my point though. Nobody is debating "RD" is a good album but "see, it's on a Source list!" doesn't mean much.

In KC, Missouri we have Hot 103 Jamz. They played rap and R&B but nothing outside of singles, and no Jay in 1996 besides "Ain't No....". Which people out here didn't even like that much.

The only exception to that was The Hot 8 At 8 where you could call in and request whatever. Most votes = top 8 = it gets play. And then around midnight there was a rap show where they'd play everything. It's where I first heard "The bytch In Yoo", Gravediggaz, and BONE.

your city doesn't represent the whole country because in my city and state, there were no stations that played rap all day. You had thursday and sunday nights with the college station to listen to Hip hop(no popular hip hop)_ and at midnight on saturday gong into Sunday, all hip hop and r&b stopped. Gospel was played all day on sunday until midnight. Times are different now.

I ain't never been to the Apollo but outta curiosity I checked out the seating chart

That person got some good seats...that seat today is prob at least 80 or 90 on the low end.

Edit: never mind...I looked up random shows playing this year...same seat area 110 and up

I remember that show. Mary Flowers was actually my next door neighbor. She had a lot of classic events back in the golden era.

Most people who say Jay was a "nobody" in '96, weren't even around in '96 themselves. It's corny.

I knew who he was way before '96. Ras Kass was on the Priority promo tour with Jay back then, and has always told stories about how crowds in other cities knew all the words to Jay's songs when the album came out. Dude was a freshmen and had already built a nice following outside of his own market. But let the losers on here tell it, if they didn't know who he was, no one else did.

Jealousy is a muthaf*cka.

what's confusing? they called it the best. has nothing to do with popularity.

you seem to not be able to conflate popularity and critical response. you still stan marvel when most people admit there ass now. "but they had the 3rd and 10th biggest movies this year!"

Not gonna lie I had no idea who Jay Z was in 96. First time seeing him was on this

Then I probably didn't hear another song by him until 98 with Can I Get A.. with Ja Rule.

Him and Nas sold the same ammount of albums on their debut. Yet they swear Nas was some kind of big shot outside of NY but Jay wasnt:mjlol:

Jayz embarrassed himself over the Pimp Of The Year beat. And Nas had bars but folks heard Kool G Rap before :unimpressed:

Ok. One radio station out of many across the country, truth is, many, the majority of radio stations across the country did not play rap music all day which sets the narrative that Jayz was not being played all day on the radio. In 1996 that was not the case.

Rap music was not played 24/7 in the 90s like that on the radio. You did not sit around listening to rap music all day in the 90s. I'd say radio start becoming rap friendly around 97, 98, meaning you could hear rap music on the radio during the day.

If you rode in the car with your mama and dad in 1996, you wasn't listening to no dayum rap music because, again many rap stations did not play rap songs during the day and two many black parents were not into rap in 1996. Many

If you wasn't over 16 or had older siblings, uncles who were 20-30 yrs old, older cousin, and they had to have their own car, many kids did not listen to rap music At
ALL
Their parents were not riding around town listening to rap music in the it cars in 1996
Not the case.

In 1996 2Pac was the only person selling more than Nas. It Was Written debuted at #1 in the country. I believe it went good it’s first week.

At this point in the process Jay-Z & Nas weren’t in the same league in terms of selling records
