Nothing I said is cap. Did I mention it being a mainstream success right off the bat? Hell no, I’m talking about hard hitting impact to the real heads in the streets. Obviously Jay-Z didn’t truly crossover into superstar status until Hard Knock Life. The fact is that Reasonable Doubt has been held in high regard by Hip-Hop heads since it released.

You sucked Jay-Z's dikk with your post better than Bey ever has. Don't try to move the goalposts now lmao. Hov is a legend, not my #1 DOA but the argument can be made. Let's just stop pretending he was immediately a star with Reasonable Doubt because that shyt is a lie.

Jay grinded to get where he was at...

When Biggie died, he took the torch and ran with it.

People didn't go back and check Reasonable Doubt until Vol 2 just like East Coast cats didn't go back and buy UGK's albums until they heard Big Pimpin.

If anything, timing helped Jay because Pac was going to give Jay the Chino treatment and he would have had to go against Big for the throne if they didn't die

The thing that always kill me with this shyt. Its like dudes didn’t follow hip hop. Its like cats only thought it was 5 or 6 rappers. Like how did u not know who jay was in 96? He had the lead single on one of the biggest movies that year. 2 songs with scorching hot Foxy

So u either a cracker or someone who just started to get into rap. Also u could be from the south. Being cable tv didn’t exist til 2000

He was still just another rapper at that point. He wasn't A or B-List. There was a small margin of folks that were actual fans, which is fine. It was the same for most rappers that weren't superstars.

People here are really bitter about Jay-Zs success so they feel the need to overexaggerate the years where he wasn't a big deal as if they're some sort of referendum on his entire career, nevermind the fact that RD sold the same amount as The Infamous, Cuban Linx, Illmatic etc and Jay already had a Top 40 single and Bad Boy features

It’s a fascinating case study into the ‘underdog’ brain. They feel threatened

Literally the exact same dynamic as Katt Williams and Kevin hart

When Jay z rises up slowly, it means he was a lame

When another artist does it, it’s a badge of honor that he’s one of us and it’s trendy to be underground. Like no one would ever disparage a Sean Peice bc he didn’t sell.

But then when he DO sell they use that against him too :heh:

I went to high school in Brooklyn in the 90s and never heard of Jay Z until Big Pimpin

:laff:

Nggas proudly admitting they was dweebs :snoop:

You saw cats clowning his mainstream success and thought that made it safe for you. Nah ngga, jay z wasn’t MAINSTREAM but he was thoroughly known by Vol 1 and especially Vol 2

Hard knock life was a top 10 billboard track and #1 rap song

Jay headlined the Hard Knock life tour, over DMX.

Also everyone always mentions Vol 2. But they forget Streets is watching dropped before Vol 2. It was on the streets. It’s Alright and Love for Free was bangers. And not crossover, he was respected in the hood. He was ringing out in whips.

I was being 100% honest. You sound feminine as hell with your gossip girl schtick. I didn’t say he was a star. Stop putting words in my mouth, clown.
