After the ordeal with RIAA concerning Samsung buying a million copies of his latest album, Jay has soemthing to be happy about. Not only was the rule changed now to accommodate what happened, The album, Magna Carta Holy Grail is now certified platinum by the RIAA, seeing as the rule change allowed it to become eligible for certification only 30 days after its release date.

I'm not a fukking mathematician, but I'm pretty sure it's barely been 10 days if that :youngsabo:

The RIAA never changed their rules, Billboard did . . why are so many of you people getting that confused?

Actually that's not true. RIAA used to wait a minimum of 30 days before awarding out a Gold or Platinum award. They changed the rules by giving Jay his award on the day his album drops. As for this happening. Basically Jay, RIAA and Billboard just checkmated Soundscan something heavy. But they will still report Jay's 1st week sales at 350-400k even though it's clearly 1.4 Million 1st week. As for people saying this is "Cheating".

Just cause Jay found a new way to go Platinum doesn't mean people need to hate. LL Cool J probably needed to try and do the same to market himself better as he's grown older. LL is on his 14th LP and it seems his album doesn't have any buzz. Jay Z on his 12th LP just two behind and he's already Platinum still changing the game. We are in uncharted waters. We've never had a 40+ Year old Rapper this relevant, this popular. That's why I said Hip Hop is truely growing up with someone like Jay running laps around the entire game.

You people are confused

Nothing changed at all, the timing in which the certification was awarded that's it.

Soundscan/Billboard still counts units sold . . as always

RIAA still counts units shipped . . as always

Samsung bought the albums wholesale, as would Best Buy before they are sold to the consumer. Shipped, not sold

Yep. LL hasn't gone Platinum in 15 years. LL's last Platinum album was the Puff Daddy produced "Phenomenon" LP that came out in 1997. LL has had 4 Gold albums in a row after that and his last LP didn't get a certification. His new album isn't going Gold either. So Jay is the 1st 40+ year old solo emcee to go Platinum and be this relevant.

You can't call it "breaking a record" if you get the rules changed specifically to make it that way. And this move is part Jay trying to rig the game in his favor and part record-industry paranoia over declining sales and the changes brought by downloading and other technological developments. It will only make it harder for worthwhile artists to find success through this route.

At least the music industry is more open about its cynical nature now- you don't even need actual humans listening to your album to go plat anymore.
