Is Jay one of rappers who didn't have to sing on all of the hooks to sell records? It seems like, that's why people call him boring or say his albums are not good.

It wasn't that the labels thought Jay-Z was terrible, it was more so Jay hadn't discovered his sound (Style) yet at that time.
Was it really that though? With In My Lifetime 1 & 2, and Dead Presidents 1 they still were struggling to find someone to sign them. I think it was more a case of a lot of other talented rappers that aren't deemed mainstream enough. Labels care about stardom and not who can make a dope record.

He started in 86. He definitely didn’t have it until later on.

True underdog story. Guys like Nas came into the game with all-star production ensembles [on his debut], 5-mic Source Magazine reviews, and critics hailing them as “the second coming of Rakim” off the rip.

Jay wasn’t setup to have the career that he wound up eventually having
