Jean Grae needs to let go of the hopes she'll blow up

As many of the other posters have already said, more than likely she's comfortable where she is. Every artists' intent and aspirations aren't the same.

Another thing to be cognizant of is the state of the music industry. In a lot of cases, " blowing up " requires having access to resources; which more often than not are possessed by a major label. Signing with a major isn't a wise move for everyone because of the sacrifice of control amongst other things.

Some people think that visibility equates to success. Well, it can, if you're goal is to be famous, but that may not lead you to the fortune - ask the remaining members of TLC (no offense, T-Boz... I love you, baby!).

That's the thing though, she's not looking to be a huge artist in the sense of piggy backing off a Nikki or whomever to get on a bigger platform. Some artists are really content with where they're at and or the moves they make. I can't say how much Jean makes but for her to be living "Good" off the music and she has not 1 Top 10 hit and or huge record sales she's gotta be doing something right. Also, a lot of the "smart" Independent artists have taken the money they've made and simply invested smart to where they can make a really good living and still make the music they wanna make. Whether in Europe, NY, LA...she packs crowds somehow.

its possible, dude. a lot of these "low tier" rappers in terms of popularity here in the U.S, can have realllllly big fan-bases overseas and eat good off of touring outside the U.S

I don't know about Jean Grae, but a lot of these Indy artist who many think live in rat holes because they don't have huge buzzes in the States a lot of times make a killing overseas. Those Euro Cacs and Japs love them some f*ckin Indy / 90s Hip Hop. I remember reading this interview with Elzhi talkin about he made in 3-4 months touring Europe what he would've made 2-3 yrs in the States. He said he hit 6 figure mark just off that tour. I know from some Euro promoters who came to Miami a couple yrs back saying dudes like Dilated, Kweli, etc were getting stupid money in Switzerland and Germany.

But there are known, established, popular acts who can't clear 100k a year. shyt, there are underground, artsy acts with more artistic underground cred than Jean Grae who don't come close to clearing that much. My cousin is a famous rapper who has a cult following and has been touring internationally for decades now, and I'd be surprised if he come close to clearing 100k in a year. You know how many shows a rapper with Jean Grae's slight drawing power would have to do in a year to clear 100k??? Like 5 a night. bytch would be having crowds of 18 people and shyt. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Side note, I always thought Jean was overrated both as an m.c. and as a fukkable broad. She's cool but not outstanding in either realm.

Another side note: We were in the same class for 2nd and 3rd grade. Tsidi was her name. I remember she used to rock the grandma sweaters and be mad quiet. I also was in 6th through 8th grade with Styles P's wife. Adjua. She was actually very attractive back then. Has that gorgeous, rich, dark complexion. I feel like shorty had plastic surgery done and puts made foundation and shyt on her face on some self-hating darksinned shyt, because she fukked up her looks something crazy. Trust me, that overseas dough is not there for every random artist who had a 90s or early 2000 underground buzz. Talib is exponentially more popular than Jean Grae, man. Jean Grae is NOT commanding $100K unless she's hustling 300 shows a year and minimizing expenses by staying in a tent in the woods of the Netherlands in between shows. My cousin is mad more famous than Jean Grae and has a serious white people following and tours mad European countries and he is not caked up like that. You gotta have the perfect storm of great timing, a consistent fanbase, strong management, and projects that keep you buzzing in order to see that living wage paper.
