Initially statement was about people questioning why there are so many Heat fans all the sudden since 2010. Thing is the trend of being a Lakers fan started at some point in time too. At some point they became successful and many people who have no direct ties to the Lakers or the city of Los Angeles "joined the bandwagon" and stayed for the ride.
The ways people typically become fans of teams
- Lived there
- Grew up around existing fans
- Became a fan during a time then said team was successful
Ive never heard of a Lakers fan who became a fan when they sucked in the early 90s when Nick van Exel, Eddie Jones and Elden Campbel were their best players and they were barely winning 40+ games. It's always "ive been a fan since the Magic and Jabbar years" or "Been a fan since they got Shaq." that was THEIR point in time to jump on the bandwagon.
Well believe it or not people became fans of teams in down years because of a players, loving the team's style of play, etc. not only for the reasons you listed. For instance, I was living in North Carolina when I became a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and everyone knows they were shytty in the 80's as a whole. For goodness sake Danny White was the QB, but someone would accuse me of being a bandwagon fan. Jumping on the bandwagon of a losing team? Furthermore, did you know that you can be fans of other teams and players? When the Lakers were winning in 80's, I was a huge fan of the Utah Jazz with Adrian Dantely and later on Mailman and Stockton, fan of the Bad Boy Pistons because I loved their style and Zeke was one of my fav players. But when those teams played LA......I always rooted for LA no matter what. Now when it comes to Miami, it's clear that most fans are fans of Lebron and never cared about Wade when Shaq left. I inderstand the point youre making about LA fans, but them never setting foot in Cali means nothing. People can be fans of whomever for whatever reasons, but when you switch teams......you're not a real fan, you're just a bandwagon fan who's going to jump on the next best thing like a whore.

That too. YOu could like a player and root for his team becaus of it. I like Tim Duncan and David Robinson so i tend to root for the Spurs. y rooting interest will be probably be over once Timmy leaves. Some people become fans like that and STAY. Some LEAVE.
In the 80s i rooted for the Bulls because Pippen was my favorite player growing up. I lost interest in the BUlls the minute Pippen went to Houston and the the Blazers. At that time I started rooting for the Blazers too.
But there is a difference between rooting for a team and being a fan of a team. Every year you find yourself rooting for a team in the Super Bowl that may or may not be your team.
