I did too, he was a rough 84. Did he have an illness or stroke?Thought he was way older
I think he knew we'd never be simply viewed as "American" by many ppl.
So in order to not be labeled Black-American or Negro-American or something that further separated us from other humans, he came up with that term.
He wasn't perfect and had his flaws, but he did more than anybody today is doing.

i believe it came out in 1800’s by a WM & it was completely rejected by us
like literally our biggest, most important significant black leaders throughout history, pretty much separated themselves from the term African like Frederick Douglas , Elijah Mohammed, MLK, etc., etc.
MLK often used the term negro when describing us. Not sure about the others referral methods. But negro was not a good term to use bc of the other N word, plus F that, we didn't come up with that term anyway.
What I'm saying is, yt ppl were simply "American", Black ppl were never going to be called American in circles where it mattered.
