Florida Gators quarterback Jeff Driskel was unexpectedly drafted by the Boston Red Sox last month, and the junior now has a backup plan in case football doesn’t work out.

Driskel was selected in the 29th round by the Sox and confirmed over Twitter Thursday that he signed with the team:

Though Driskel’s mother told the Orlando Sentinel that her son hadn’t done anything since being drafted, his father confirmed to the paper that his son signed.

“Heck yeah he signed,” Jerry Driskel said. “If football doesn’t work out, he’ll play baseball, but he’s still playing football [at Florida next season].”

Driskel is a top athlete and helped lead Florida to an 11-2 season last year. He threw for 1,646 yards while rushing for 408. He accounted for 16 touchdowns (12 passing/four rushing).

Driskel has not played baseball since his senior season at Hagerty High School in 2011. Scouts reportedly told Driskel’s high school coach that the quarterback had first-round talent. This story from Gator Zone describes how Driskel played baseball in Japan growing up and traveling baseball as he got older. At one point in high school, Driskell supposedly hit a 477-foot home run. Perfect Game even clocked his fastball at 94 mph.

After reading all that about him, I’m wondering why Driskel didn’t just pursue baseball instead of football.

How does this work as far him getting paid goes? I remember the OU players a few years back were working at a car dealership in Norman and got in trouble for it. But a job is a job right? How does this not affect his amatuer status? :patrice:

This isn't anything new for us:

Doug Johnson did this back in 1999 (wish that chump woulda stayed in baseball)

Driskel is not the first Florida football player to sign with an MLB team while still in school. Former receiver Riley Cooper (2006-2009) signed with the Texas Rangers during the summer of 2009 but returned for his senior season that fall, while former quarterback Doug Johnson (1996-1999) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as a freshman and played two summers of minor league baseball for the organization before completing his college football career.

Driskel can remain NCAA eligible and on scholarship at UF as long as the money and/or benefits he receives from the Red Sox are baseball-specific and he doesn't sign any commercial endorsement deals.

‘‘After my college football career is over I want to pursue a professional career in the NFL,” Driskel said in a statement. “If I ever decide I want to play baseball, I want to play with the Boston Red Sox who drafted me in the recent draft.''

But I mean since he's all but assured to win the Heisman either this year or next year and be the top pick in the 2015 draft (:mjpls:) it's safe to say he won't have to worry about baseball

Drew Henson, Ricky Williams, and recently Piyush Wilson did it back when he played for NC State.

I know it happens a lot but how does it work in regards to being paid by a pro team and not jeapordizing the amatuer status?

Kyle Parker of Clemson did in 2010 as well. Colorado drafted him he signed, but played through the whole 2010 football season. Now he's playing in the Rockies AA affiliate.

i don't think they get paid since they aren't with the team. they just have his rights so if he does decide to play he has to play with them
