As someone who lived though the PS3/Xbox 360 era, no the hell it wasn't.

Microsoft was really trying to get PlayStation out the paint. The whole "war for control of the living room" shyt. That was the reason why MS got involved in the console industry in the first place.

Yeah lol, the narrative was a LOT different hell even just a few years ago. Up until the tail end of 2023, there was a completely different strategy being brewed with the Activision acquisition.

We had cats just a little over 3 years ago saying this

Warcraft yeah that's a XBox exclusive
OverWatch yeah that's a XBox exclusive
Call of duty yeah that's a XBox exclusive

They weren't even trying to "get them out the paint"


They just didn't want Sony to dominate and creep into the PC space which they felt was the living room at that time.

Xbox was originally pitched and approved as a PC gaming console, a console that ran Windows but also played games, and the only reason it got funding was because Bill Gates thought it was going to be a window based PC with a gaming OS 1st and foremost.

Microsoft literally making sure everyone has to way to play games and people are bashing them. In the long run though like always it will be the standard.


I really don't see the big deal, the 1st year or 2 of gaming probably can be run on xbx1, will it be the best looking or best experience... probably not. But instead of locking anyone out for 1 or 2 games everyone has access. They did the same thing with the X1X and this is a much bigger power jump than that one.... so you'll likely to see a big difference.


Sony on the other hand is about to give you godfall (1st) and make you purchase a whole system and you all have zero clues what ps5 exclusives are gonna be dropping in the next two year. But buy the (sofar) lesser powerful system to play multiplatform games in hopes of sony exclusives with in the next 4 years.

I'll pick up my Series X knowing that I will have the most powerful, an actually exclusive and that the multiplatform games i have will probably look and run better than on the ps5 and have access to all my old xbox game library, and accessories that will be usable on the series X.

This generation did NOT pan out the way they said it would at ALL. Series X and PS5's power difference resulted in the most miniscule difference often not even in Series X's favor lmao.

Both things can be true:

M$ is finding a way to be successful

AND

They stumbled upon this path because they couldn't beat Sony or Nintendo in the console wars.

Let's not kid ourselves. They wanted to push the most console units...and that was their original goal. They DID NOT switch up just because. They changed course because they were losing badly.

However, they got enough money and smart people to redirect and find a lane that works for them.

Yeah I can't see what's in the OP looks like a lot of reaching after seeing Apple vs EU. If they announce another Xbox then things are weird, but if it looks like they're changing plans on the fly after buying studios and becoming a multiplat, it's because they are. But that doesn't mean they have to cancel Xbox right now

They found a way to do what Sony & Nintendo can't and make money without hardware. All the "your phone is an Xbox" etc is just primer to pulling out of the console business and "Xbox" being a software company. They can say even when you didn't have an Xbox you still had one, here's gamepass horseshyt etc

MS made Xbox to beat Sony since they saw Playstation as a threat to PCs back then, on that note, the Xbox outside of .75 of 1 gen was a failure. Now trends have shifted back to the PC and these consoles are now just weak PCs, why not relax and do software? Looking at it that way, Xbox is giving something to MS's bottom line long term so it has to be a success too
