I agree with the premise, but the Jehovah Witnesses are a cult started by a cac named Charles Taz Russell who was an adulterer and con artist.

They swoon their members out of lots of money and they ostracize the members from their own families and friends, all the signs of a cult.

They still check in on you here and then but on the down low. The parents technically have free will but the peer pressure is too strong.
