That's why I'll always give the edge to Ventura over Heenan, Lawler, etc. as far as heel color commentators are concerned. He'd call a face wrestler out for some crooked/stupid BS that they would pull, and he'd even sometimes call the heels out for the same thing as well if they pulled a

I know when Macho died, he said that he was at some event, and he had to walk out alone by a balcony overlooking a peer and cry. Piper's death hit him pretty hard too because he kept in touch with Roddy. He also kept in touch with Gorilla until a few short days before he died and he was Governor then.
Dude never forgot where he came from even when he got success outside of wrestling.

ventura has always been the goat commentator imo, he played his role to perfection.
any pairing of ventura/monsoon or ventura/mcmahon was gold.
really any combo of mcmahon/monsoon(pbp) with heenan/ventura(color) were great.
