Every big artist was doubted before they blew. Jay couldn't even get a deal. Russell Simmons refused to sign Nas because he thought he sounded too much like Kool G Rap. All of them got that story, in all genres of music. Listening to record company execs about what will blow or not is borderline pointless.

It is what is. If you can't find success out the gate on your own, study those who did. Jay did a lot of that, getting close to Steve Stoute, copying nikkas styles, production, etc.:manny:

If it's that easy why he the only one successful at it?

Jay albums sound like Jay albums, they don't sound like other nikkas albums. Of course the influences will be there but that's like any genre. John Coltrane was on that be-bop shyt and then when free jazz became a thing he completely switched his style up, same with Miles Davis. And they're STILL legends.

I hate this narrative that you have to stick to one style in hiphop and never be influenced by what people like at that moment.

He's not the only one successful at it. He's definitely the most successful. It's ok to be in "influenced" by other people but we've heard and seen it from Jigga many times. And is "influenced" the right word in some of these cases?

I think so, yes. By "these cases" I suspect you only mean one case...Young Chris. I could be wrong.

I'm also talking about finding out what other rappers are doing music and business so he can copy them or get the jump on them.
