My point was the futility in the whole thing.

She is precisely what the average Black American would say we need to save our people.

“If you don’t like the system then go to school and run for city council”

This shows that even when exercising/mobilizing political clout on the CIVIC level they have mechanisms to further stunt our development,

edit: I realized now that by pointing out she was a Black woman from New York in Coli minds that may have been perceived as being negative.
I couldn't make heads or tales about your position so I just commented on the quoted.:manny:

When you dont hold all the cards you gotta learn to cut deals. Could they not have agreed to earmark a portion of the properties to a certain income threshold? That way he gets his units built, you increase affordable housing by some discernable metric, and everyone gets to have their picture taken for the newspaper. Now everyone looks bad except one guy looks bad and still gets paid.

It's not futile but this shows he who has the financial capital has the power.

they hold cards it's city council. if it comes to it the government can play a heavy hand to win. they just not tryna pull out the sledge hammers on property investors. this is where public pressure matters. it's much easier for local government to cave to people pressure publicly and force an investors hand that way. that's how a lot of other units got forced into including affordable units.

For that you have to have parties willing to negotiate in good faith. The m.o. is to be as annoying a pest as humanly possible until they get their way. Failing that...strongarm tactics.:francis:

They hold SOME not ALL the cards. At the end of the day they don’t own the property. Just because the guy wanted to build housing there doesn’t mean that was the only thing he could build. So now everyone in that neighborhood about to get a healthy dose of diesel fuel and a shut ton of pot holes.

Granted I don’t know what all was on the table but if a compromise was offered and the builder refused then put that front and center as part of the protest as well.

they can rezone that plot to not allow that business. He doesn't want to build affordable housing. none of the developers do. the others that were forced to even went as far as putting in "poor" doors in buildings with mixed income units in NYC. This billionaire built the easiest shyt he could... to tear down a slab of concrete with a roof won't take long. He knows he won't keep it as a truck depot long term he's trying to be a major inconvenience to the people around his plot of land and the people have to bust back in city council. Eminent domain laws exist and they are used in cases like this if things can't get resolved. with enough push back from the people if the owner refused to compromise for better purpose for the property the government could take it give market rate for it, sell it to a developer and require them to put in the affordable units. the people can prove that those units are crucial and that a truck stop there is a hazard.

this is a last resort type of thing. the billionaire is flexing and people have to flex back their power. they count on the lil guys to feel demotivated to pursue the fight. You can't drop a pin in a rich neighbourhood without city council and the neighbourhoods knowing about it and having opinions and a say. they know who and where they target because not everyone is engaged in the political process the same way.
