If you drop an album with all original beats that’s not a mixtape. That is just an underground album without a barcode.

A mixtape is a rapper rapping over a bunch of other artist already famous songs.

Who did that first?

By Jim Jones definition of a mix tape DJ Quik did that with The Red Tape 15/20 years before DipSet was even heard of.

If we are talking ORIGINAL MIXTAPE that goes back to Dj actually put out their blend tapes in the 80s before both groups.
Their mixtapes had all of it. DJ Kay Slay hosted them. They had freestyles. Rapped over industry shyt but also had a bunch of original shyt a well. Jim isn't wrong here. Whether nikkas like him or not. Some of their most classic songs on their albums started on their mixtapes first.

The dipset tapes had the same „formula“ as the g unit tapes though, with a lot of popular current and older instrumentals being used to rap over like eminems „stan“ or „bytches aint shyt“ on diplomats volume 1 for example

nikkah flat out lying. 50 revolutionized that shyt because his mixtape shyt was getting play on radio. I use to hear After My Cheddar on radio. He even got signed and sold out shows off the strength of his mixtape run.

I didn't hear any Dipset shyt on radio or in the streets like that till Cam got on the ROC. Aside from that What Means the world to U shyt. There wasn't much Dipset shyt getting blasted . It wasn't till they started dissing Nas was when they really got they mixtape burn

134 All Stars were dropping tapes before Dipset

stupid argument though.. both of them got bigger from tapes but 50 absolutely changed the game.

For an artist led mixtape where the DJ is only the "host" or some other gimmick, Dipset is technically the first because Diplomats Volume 1 came out before the first G Unit one. You could argue the G unit ones had more impact or this was the logical place mixtapes would have went, but Dipset did do it first.

They did not do what Gunit did. G unit didnt just rap over the beat of other artist. G unit had total song structure. Not just nikkas rapping on a beat. They were the first to do that.

I fukk with dipset mixtapes but you nikkas smoking on that glass dikk if you think they shyt was even fukking with Automatic Gunfire or Guess who's back. I let you nikkas slide on Sohh. I chalked it up to you nikkas being white boys who just got a hold of hiphop.

As someone who was current in the rap landscape at that time, Jimmy is 100% correct

The Diplomats Vol 1 & Vol 2 projects is the reason I became a fan of their music

Diplomats Vol 1 also set the runway for Cam's Rocafella debut

50 went crazy on the mixtape circuit, but Dipset laid the blueprint

G unit didn’t start any mixtape movement, lot of rappers were doing the same at the time :mjlol:

Yeah, they were mostly just freestyles and no one was making actual songs. They weren’t creating hooks and bridges to these beats. Dipset and Gunit structured their mixtapes leaps and bounds better.m than everyone, at that time. Everyone knows they never created mixtapes but they for sure made everyone step their game up.
