Out here in my damn drawls
If I didn't land this intership this summer, I was going to drop out of college before my upcoming senior year and drive tanker freight (food grade chemicals and oil) for my pops after I got my CDL....hell, I still might after I graduate. The lifestyle and the pay is right up my alley. Save up for a few years, keep my expenses to a bare minimum and by the time I'm 26 I'll have enough seed money to break free from that employee life :ohlawd:

Only real skill I have is artistic ability (I draw my own comic/manga, plus I can draw pretty much anything in front of me, not to mention I can write stories and scripts as well)...but no ones looking for that...I make a few bucks every now and then off of drawing and illustrating, but nothing substantial. People be wanting graphics more often (which I can also do, but to a lot lesser degree. I'm more of the pencil/pen paper type of guy)...idk maybe I should just practice more graphic shyt once I get a new laptop...:yeshrug:

I just recently received my work permit and SSN so I am now able to work on the books but :snoop:

Best buy turned me down because I don't have any experience working as a cashier. How hard is that shyt? :why: Most of the cashiers are a$$holes with nasty attitude. I just applied for a Burger King in the neighborhood but the manager looks like a thirsty knight because he only wants a female :mindblown: McDonalds won't even reply back :smh:

My previous job experiences are assisting a carpenter, construction and recently 2 years at Hunts Point Produce market. In none of those jobs I had previous experience before starting but gained it quickly. I just want a job where I can work inside and not worry about slipping in the rain :to:

I saw an ad on craiglist for a dishwasher PT that required at least 4 years experience :what:

It seems that if you don't have hook ups, you can't get jobs. I had two hooks up in the past at restaurants but turned them down because I didn't have a SSN and didn't want to work with a fake one. Some restaurant owners don't care if you use a fake one as they like to pay cheap and prefer illegals.

Since u have experience in carpentry u should try that route. Save up to get your trade license. You can make some good money doing contract work. I work at a home improvement store and those who know how to hustle make good money. Be your own boss and control your own future. The main thing besides the job is to save and look into getting some type of health insurance. Where I'm from if you make under a certain amount the county provides health coverage if you sign up for it. Not the bet but its better then nothing.

These companies got the upper hand so they want alot for nothing. Most jobs I apply for are entry level but require years of experience....makes no sense. You have to put yourself in a position to live stable and be able to retire one day. The only way to do that is to have a plan. Going into a trade like becoming a. Electrician or carpentry is a good start for those who are handy. Bottomline you gotta network. Alot of these people I work with are lazy with bad attitudes but they got put on because of who they knew. Go out and talk to people, connect and just hustle.

man, I told my pops that his generation straight fukked my generation in this job game. I mean they had it built like a house of cards being unstable as fukk. yeah it was all good for them to have abundant jobs and HUGE retirement packages, but that shyt doesn't exist and cuz their retirement packages are so lavish, now we gotta pay for this shyt. he was basically like :yeshrug: :ahh:

then goes back to playing golf every morning and vacationing 6 times a year.

no offense, but those are low-level, low-paying jobs. just lie on ur resume about your experience. They'll train you on the job anyways.

Yea my friends dad who is a very successful business man, says all you need to do is lie. He says young people don't have enough confidence in themselves. Just lie and go in there with confidence and make them believe it. You will be trained on the job anyway.

Share the knowledge on good networking techniques brehs.:ohhh:

never hesitate to strike up a convo with someone....always say hello if you're in an elevator...smiling helps. If you have the ability to disarm people you're half way there. Its about making people comfortable...

Do you go to the gym? Play basketball at nights? Go places that force you to interact with people...

Lie your ass off.... Network hard as fukk.

Like professional organizations... Email people and ask to meet at their office or for coffee

Pretty much this.

Getting your foot in the door for the interview is the hard part. Once you're there, you just gotta be smooth and not fukk up. Every company likes to hire black people, we're a tax credit.

smiling helps.

Smiling is probably the #1 thing that people first notice when they meet you. The power of a big genuine smile cannot be overstated. For some reason, it's also something that we, as black men, tend not to do. Get your smile game up, brehs. Get invisalign or teeth-whitening if you need it. A good smile will go a long way with females as well.
