How can a new employer find out you're embellishing job duties from your previous employer?

Here's a hint: they CAN'T.

The whole name of the game is matching keywords from the job posting inside your skills and duties sections of your résumé. Most HRs have an automated system that cuts down the number of applicants before an HR rep can even see it.

Don't lie. Embellish. And match keywords.

I've been unemployed since 2007. I can't even estimate how many jobs I've applied to over the years. So far, I've only had 3 interviews with companies that I've found on my own and about 10 from staffing agencies. I've been making it (on a wing and a prayer) from jobs that the staffing agencies have hooked me up with.

Keywords is bullshyt! I have customized and tailored my resume for every job I've applied to and have received nothing other than the acknowledgement that my resume was received.

My last and final option is to join the military. My friends and family are strongly against this but they don't realize how bad my struggle for permanent employment is. My friends have stated that joining the military is exactly what "they" want but what is my other option? I've been waiting and applying like crazy but nothing is biting.

And Sallie Mae is eating half of my unemployment check :sadbron:

Breh what kinda degree did you get?:lupe:

And where you live? I hear some parts of the country are more favorable to hiring brothers than other parts.

Networking is easier said than done.

Most people get jobs or into companies through relatives and friends they have know for a long time.

That Good ole boys network is unbeatable.

True, and the worst thing is that when you try to contact these people you network with, they never hit you back :beli:

I have recently decided to switch jobs because I hate what I do now and right after I told myself Im switching jobs my hours get cut back tremendously. I've been looking for months and have been honest on my resume and applications. A friend of mine told me to basically lie on my resume about where I work and what I done, but don't they check that stuff out?

In the mean time I'm gonna get in contact with this Temp Agency I worked with before on Monday and try some online Freelance gigs.

I have an Associates in Criminal Justice, Bachelors in Mass Comm, & a Masters in Communications. I stay in Washington, DC so I've been applying to federal, corporate and non-profits heavily! I've applied for positions all across the country, even Hawaii.

I just took the plunge and applied for Correctional Officer with the Feds...but I want a job where I can go home in one piece and not in a coffin :sadcam:

Also, internship in college is fukking useless, unless your daddy knows somebody that knows somebody, or great grandfather funded the company :pacspit:

I don't think this is true. But I gotta wonder about where some of you went to school? A few classmates and I both got summer internships at the same company the semester before our senior years which turned into a full time offer after graduation. I went to an hbcu tho, you know those schools y'all like to shyt on so much but the teachers actually look out for you? That's the most important network to me, cause a lot of them are coming from these professional fields and they have all the contacts in the world.

I think a big problem is that ppl get these degrees and try to stay where they are at (location) or where there school is at. A good degree within a saturated job market means nothing. I pretty much kno I have to move elsewhere when i graduate :sadcam:

Damn, is life really that hard out here brehs. :ld:

I think that many of you should devote your time to building and learning specialized skills/trades

From the tones I'm getting in this thread, it seems as if a lot of people have very general/non-technical degrees, which is fine if you supplement that with a kind of "ability".

I'd also say look into entrepreneurial things as well. I'd recommend to even people who are working. I think it's always good to control your own money. Building up my skills and shyt now, I'd like to leave my job at least a year from now with the money saved and get something started up with some friends.

I feel bad for those who came out of school around 07-08 tho. That job market wasn't no hoe and people are still suffering from that. Hard to get a job when you never had one if you're not right out of college any more. :lupe:

I agree, I try to tell my friends to move out of their comfort zone area, there are alot of jobs out there, but everyone wants to stay in the Hot City like NYC/ATL/DC/MIA which than becomes over saturated with too many people fighting for a small amount of jobs.
