Breh, it really highlights just now different things are now. I think a lot of people are forgetting that all the times they heard heard the song on a show, in a movie, or a game, or anywhere else meant jack shyt for sales, and people weren't really going out and buying singles like that back then. The iTunes store was still pretty new back then, so people weren't even fully used to being able to buy individual tracks digitally yet.
Now, with almost everything counting. Artists that I've never even heard of are out here with double digit platinum songs that I swear I can't verify anyone has actually listened to for real.
