D-1 football athletes are not their for an education, and NO, the education is not free and has been bought and paid for by their predecessors per the schools's business model....

If Under Armour wants to approach a 21 year old college athlete about doing a commercial, then he should be in full control of his image\likeness.....
But per the NCAA, the school owns your identity until your contract with them is up....

Every other student with a scholarship (full or partial) can work and make money, just like every adult in America can. Why can't college athletes?

Less than half qualify academically for the schools they get in
Free food, weight training, medical, housing, travel, tutors, coaching, books, etc. if they get in trouble with the law guess who pays to get them outta jail? The school
Players leave school with no debt. You seen the average cost of student loans ($25,000)? It ain't cheap.
I'm in favor of players getting higher stipends and getting money if their likeness is used (I propose that money get put in a fund and the players receive that check or payments after they get outta school). But how would you pay players equally? Wouldn't the big schools just outbid everybody? Would the QB make more than the DE or RG? I just don't think it's feasible to pay college athletes especially when the majority of these players don't match the economic impact the school invests in them based on the free services given to football players that I listed above

They have no case though since their sports don't generate money or sponsorships.

i hate the ncaa and the fact that they claim to be a non-profit when all they care about is profit. i sometimes think college is one of the biggest scams ever.
This. Just goes to show you how immature he was. This spoiled brat was warned of this exact situation and the NCAA rules about it but Johnny wanted his 5 figures.

All those are valid points....But at the end of the day, everybody is not equal....I agree with you in saying that if the colleges had to "pay" players that it would be a logistical nightmare.....
My biggest gripe is, if your play on the field lands you the opportunity to use your "own" likeness to make money, then you should be allowed to do so and the NCAA should not be able to interfere with that......
Best believe the college is making money off of your likeness, why can't you..??
