I just opened a joint account with my girlfriend. We have been dating for 3 years and are about to get married.
We both have separate bank accounts but we do have a joint checking and savings. The checking is extra money for paying off debt (student loans, etc. not house bills.) and the savings account is for saving up for a house/emergency.
A lot of people I've talked to have joint accounts as their main account (all of their money flow through the account) and each person then transfers money from the joint account to their personal accounts. I would not advise this. It seems backwards to me. The way me and my girl have it, our money goes to our personal accounts and we have a set amount that we transfer to the join accounts. This way, she has no clue how much money I have in my bank account and vice versa. Also, as I stated before, we only use the joint accounts for debt/saving for the future. So if we want something personally, we use the money in our personal accounts. If you do it like most people and let all of yall money flow through the joint account, I would think this is how arguments spark over how you are spending "our" money.
Sidebar: Me and my girl basically split the bills. I make about $20K more and have no debt, (she has debt) so I take on about 60% of the bills and she pays the other 40%.
Any working woman in 2014 talking that "men need to pay all the bills" bullshyt needs to get all the way the fukk outta here.
