I don't think anyone believes the lack of alcohol would stop rape entirely, but as far as college campuses go, until the party culture is addressed, the so called rape culture will continue. What stands out to me is that most of the cases that hit the news involve intoxication related to alcohol where either one or both parties blacked out. The alleged victim doesn't remember a thing, but knows her pu$$y has been tampered with (Devin the Dude voice). Did she give consent? Did she not give consent? She doesn't remember? Why doesn't she remember? Because she got so faded that she blacked out from partying the night before. This isn't a Cosby or Darren Sharper situation with someone spiking her drink with the vilest of intentions. No, she made the decision to get completely blasted, and then expects the public to take her side in a rape accusation that she can't entirely explain because she was out of it. Number one, why put yourself in a vulnerable situation where someone can take advantage of you? Number two, why put the public in a situation that they have to decide whether or not you were victimized? This isn't a case of blaming the victim either, rather it's using common sense to mitigate the potential for a woman to get violated.
That's not to say that's the case with the perp who's the subject of this thread either. The more I read about it, alcohol or not, he should have gotten time. He's a different kind of deviant entirely, but I'm not convinced he's typical when it comes to rape accusations on college campuses. I do think addressing the party culture would also mitigate the actions of people like him. People do crazy things when intoxicated via alcohol or drugs. It's possible he wouldn't have done the atrocious things he did to her, had he not also been faded. Regardless, he should be in prison.
