Take what you can get locally. You want a gym you can attend at least 3-5 times a week. I believe BJJ is best for defense and your health and it will be a lot easier to compete in the future if you want to do that. I wouldn't suggest taking anything that will involve live sparring (boxing/thai) if you don't plan on competing for money. No point in taking blows to head for free, it's the main reason why I stopped boxing, I had no legit future in the sport. Grappling is a lot safer, you will encounter a lot less weekend warriors.
what about taekwondo?

Boxing is all you need. You get your Little Mac on and you'll easily mangle 90% of the people you encounter on the streets. If you're like me, you're not trying to be flailing your arms in the air all like "WAAAAHHHHHHHH:ahh:" with jujitsu and shyt. You're trying to knock a nikka out if need be. So yeah, I'd say either boxing or Muay Thai. Get your striking on. I took Muay Thai for a couple of months.. learning how to knee/elbow the shyt out of mothafuka on some Sagat shyt.. :wow: BJJ is cool and I'm very sure it's highly effective, but I want my hands, elbows, knees and to a lesser extent.. kicks nice first. Alot of people come at people who sidestep it because of the whole wrestling with men thing, and I can't blame em. If you can get over that BJJ "issue" while getting your fists crisp, you'd be a beast. Just don't get grappled while you're learning how to box. :sadcam:

what about taekwondo?
I only know of two people that practice TKD, one them was a black belt and got their ass handed to them. I would say if you want to practice that, make sure the instructor is legit and isn't giving belts out like candy. I mean, if you seriously fear getting beat up, BJJ is the best. I would suggest wrestling but you can hardly get that out of school. I took thai and boxing for a year, if I was to get into a street fight today, the first thing I would do is seek the takedown. Striking is dangerous and training in the gym all day will hardly transfer over to real life unless you have actually compete often in the sport. That's when you really get a feel for whats expected but in a street fight anything can happen. You can't win every fight, especially when their are no rules. Grappling is the best way to go about controlling people, you don't have to worry about wild unexpected swings, etc. You just put them on the ground and if they are inexperienced, they lose every time, no matter the size if the fight is one on one.
