PS4 Outsells Xbox One, Even After Price Drop

PS4 claims its sixth straight month as the top-selling console, out-selling the Xbox One despite the fact that Microsoft is now selling the Xbox One at the same $399 price point. PS4 software sales also outsold Xbox One, with Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 taking the second spot overall, just behind Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs. Minecraft came in third, because apparently Mojang will not rest until every person on Earth owns at least two platforms worth of Minecraft.
Microsoft released some of its own relative sales figures before the report, saying that Xbox One sales had “more than doubled” since the company dropped the mandatory Kinect. If we assume that the PS4 sold a relatively similar number of units in June as it did in May (solely speculation) that means that the Xbox One was selling less than half the volume of the PS4 at that point. While it was obviously the right move for Microsoft to re-imagine the Xbox One SKU, it’s becoming increasingly clear just how far it has to come to catch up to Sony’s ascendant console.
Overall, however, the Xbox One and PS4 generation of consoles is in a good position, despite internal jockeying. Rumors of the death of the console industry have been greatly exaggerated: industry sales have increased for the ninth consecutive month, largely driven by new consoles.
“Combined sales of Xbox One and PS4 are over 80 percent higher than the combined totals for Xbox 360 and PS3 — an indication of the strength of the start of this new console generation,” says NPD.
We’ll see how the current-gen console war develops as more and more software built for improved hardware from the ground up hits the market. Given how well the PS4 is selling despite, arguably, a still-problematic lack of true must-buy games, bodes very well for the future of the console and the generation once we start to see titles like The Order: 1886 and Uncharted 4. Both companies are still a long way off from their most valuable exclusives, and it will be interesting to see if a system seller like Halo can resonate with the broader market in a way that the Xbox One has struggled to do with core gamers.
