I wonder if it is possible for Black people in the diaspora to find actual blood relatives in Africa using DNA ancestry. I would assume if more native Africans took DNA ancestry test they could find cousins whose ancestors were taken into slavery in the Western hemisphere.

I have. Judging from the names, two of them have been Yoruba and another Liberian.

I have a number of Jamaican matches.

And a few Brazilian matches.

I’ve tried reaching out to the African matches but most don’t respond.

How does this work? How do they test you to know this stuff? How much does it cost?

I

I'm Jamaican and did mine about a year ago and it came out 63% :stopitslime:

To prove your point even more that it doesn't matter where you are from to have high African percentages. I came back at 86% African. My mother came back at 85% African. My mother's sister came back 95% African and my mother's brother came back as 96% African. We are African Americans and our family records only show us being in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Most African Americans don't get tested, but as more do then we are going to find out that a lot of them are 85%+ and way higher than that.

Edit: Me and my mother are actually a couple of percentage points higher African, but on the test they call a portion of our DNA Polynesian instead of Madagascar. So we are both actually 87% African.

You can buy the kit from Amazon or other places. I paid like 90, the kit included a tube where you spit your saliva in and a prepaid box that you put the tube mixed in a solution with then mail it off.

4-6 weeks later you get your results

From my understanding, Benin/Togo slaves was mostly sent to Haiti but would trade with the English from time to time.

Well since Voodoo is from Togo and Benin; and it is found in Haiti and it was brought to New Orleans by slaves from Haiti. Then yes that would likely be correct.

On a side note Ancestry DNA regions are not to be taken literally. What they are really saying is that your DNA looks like the DNA of people in that region today. So you should think more in terms of regions rather than actual countries. What Ancestry doesn't say is that they don't test in other nearby countries like Burkina Faso, so they will put you in a nearby country like Togo and Benin. If you get a high Ivory Coast/Ghana test score, then your DNA might actually be from Sierra Leone, Liberia or Guinea; but since Ancestry doesn't test in those countries then they just throw you in a nearby test country like Ivory Coast/Ghana, which has similar looking DNA.
