You can get a combo of grants, scholarships and loans and whatever is left, is the refund. Most times it comes from over borrowing. I don’t think people realize you can borrow a lesser amount. They just take the number offered by financial aid and often it’s way more than you need.

I remember my first couple years of college I had a 10k grant from the University , 6K Full pell grant, and 2k grant from the state, and a state program that paid my tuition. Basically I just had to pay room and board and for meal plan and I got back whatever was left from the 18k
