If Kasi Lemmons hands is in it, expect some bullshyt.
She did the Harriet Movie too![]()
All of the characters in this show are one-dimensional. We can do better than this shyt. It’s just lazy, predictable, flat storytelling.
Plus there’s no reason to make characters gay as an artistic decision if they weren’t gay in real life. This series just screams pandering to women and LGBTQ. And I’m a huge LGBTQ advocate but...you can’t rewrite REAL people’s identities for no reason.
Yea I was about to talk about this. But I found out years ago about madame cj walkers products outside of the straighten comb. There was a reason that is all most focused on. The rest of her products encouraged self hatred and had dark skinned black women bleaching their skin way before whatever is taking place in Jamaica and Africa .i haven't watched the sseries to know the colorism discussed, but when i googled the woman from the trailer who said the colorist stuff it turned out she sold bleaching products too so i wasn't doubting that part happened
people are complex. she did some good tho in other areas based on her bio Annie Malone: First African American Millionairess (Educator, Entrepreneur & Philanthropist) -- Courtesy of The Freeman Institute -- www.PoroCollege.com

I wont post any in my stash but If one dares to go down that rabbit hole a good source is to register with newspapers.com and type in her name. You get her ads and it's pretty sad. I respect her hustle in that time though and dont judge her too harshly as this was just the mentality of many black Africans in america who were simpli trying to get rights and jobs and housing.
Oh damn. She sold bleaching stuff. :dwullhuh:
I didn't even know they had bleaching back then?
To be fair to her, she began corresponding with w.e.b Dubois and even purchased soul of black folks from him in which he thanked her for the purchase the letter he wrote her is in a museum. She began to be more conscious in a sense spoke more of being proud of her dark skin and insisted that she was not straightening sisters hair to make them more white. She also insisted her wealth would be used to uplift her people and she spoke out against lynching which prompted the fbi to spy on her.Oh damn. She sold bleaching stuff.

Deep. Ok. Wow.
People are complex. Of course we want our heroes to be "perfect", but they're flawed. I understand that time period, which is I guess is why the director/writers chose to deal with colorism the way they did.

But again I dont judge her she came up in a difficult time. We are all flawed.
See Ray Kroc..
