A movie sure can make a nondescript play look so epic.
Theres so many parts in this movie that didnt actually happen might as well have taken out the based on a true story part...Charles Duttons character never actually existed nor did Rudy struggle to pay his tuition,he was in the navy before going to Holy Cross he got his shyt paid for
fukk rudy. He wasn't ever shyt. Those plays barely happened in real life, the whole movie basically saved by it's archetypal 'magic negro' character which is racist in and of itself, and would be a disgrace if it's wasn't played so brilliantly by charles dutton.
Rudy owed his whole life to that janitor, and how did he repay him?
The whole movie is just the widely-carried hope that a below average white person can someday be celebrated as if he's great.
If Rudy in real life was black, the white janitor would have accused him of stealing, notre dame would have pressed charges, and he would have ended up a wrongly-convicted felon - and the movie would be about the no-nonsense prosecutor that helped put him away.

Movies say "based on a true story" sometimes if they just used somebodies last night in it. It's actually lulz how little they have to do to be able to use that line. I always lulz at the Pseudo-History teachers that quote "based on a true story" movies when trying to teach history.
