Justice Scalia Suggests Blacks Belong at "Slower" Colleges

I ended up at state school as well.

At the end of the day Scalia is a bigot who is trying to prevent another Obama from happening.

What I can say personally is this.

I was a really smart, ambitious kid who got accepted into top tier schools myself. Life situations forced me to choose a lower cost college. Could I have succeed academically at a more prestigious school, based on ability, hell yeah, no question, but economically no. My family situation was hard and I didn't have the familial support it would have taken to thrive.

For a lot of lower income black kids it's the truth. I think you like me resonated with that message regardless to the messenger. Scalia is a racist who doesn't deserve his bench. We all agree on this point.

There are a ton of well off black people in this country whose kids would naturally, without need of affirmative action, get accepted into Harvard, et. al. and thrive simply because they're in school with their peers. This isn't a surprise to me at all.

Should black kids who come from economically disadvantage background go to a prestigious school? DEFINITELY, but at the same time things just don't always end up the same way you think it will because you went to these schools.

Not because of lack of intellect but because the financial burden is enormous in a lot of ways.

When you talk like this other black people think you're being defeatist.

I don't think that's true though. There are a million different pathways to success I just think it's smart to choose the most economical one.

Im happy I went to SUNY though, because I was exposed to just how out of touch most people my age are. I pretty much have no respect for young people anymore. Its almost categorical that the people who make it to college had everything handed to them. Talent has nothing to do with it.

And lets not forget how white kids in the suburbs have schools from everywhere come to visit THEM, while kids in the hood get duped by ITT tech commercials.

I dont know what the true demographics are on this site, but I hope you all realize how many ways in which the deck is stacked against a poor black kid. We need to worry about getting more people to the state school level before we worry about the ivy league.

And you all see I havent mentioned Scalia right? I learned long ago to assume every white person is a racist cac hell bent on destroying my way of life until they show otherwise.

Not sure what the average Black high-school is like in the state of Texas, but It doesn't surprise me that many Black student's have issues at the collegiate level. The system is basically set up for that to be the case.

I noticed. There's so many factors at play. Many black kids get shoved through high school, when they get to college they are far behind. Thats def the case for me.

I am Black and wasn't well off financially, and was able to attend a well respected private university. I ended up taking out some loans (I owe in the range of $10-20k). I received a lot of money from various science scholarships for Black people and young scientists. If your GPA is at least 3.3 you can apply for a lot of scholarships that are geared towards young Black people in STEM related fields. Speaking from experience, it helped me out a lot.

Scalia's comments don't resonate with me because I know what he actually means. I've seen this rodeo before, next he will be quoting the Bell Curve and saying Blacks are genetically dumber than whites which is what a lot of whites want to say but they skirt around that with other phraseology.

I agree with you. Scalia is a bigot who has always opposed affirmative action. I don't agree with him that black people are less intelligent. I don't agree with him that affirmative action should be dismantled.

Define not well off financially because that and poor might be two different things.

I'm talking about working class poor. If you grew up in a relatively middle class black household I would expect that you would do well enough to get into a good school with scholarships.

Being poor though is vastly different. No amount of scholarship can make up for the lack of support needed to thrive at some of these institutions.

This isn't me dissuading anyone from doing so however. Just my experience and reaction to the part of the statement that struck a chord due to my experience.

I do not in any way support Scalia never have and never will.

I do agree with Eric Blair though. I'mglad I decided to attend state school. I ended up with a pretty cool job even though I majored in the liberal arts at that.

Listen man this is all bullshyt. We need to get as many AA in these schools as possible. Not cause they have better curriculum (who the fukk goes to uni of Texas to become a phD in the first place) but because these are where all the connections to get a job are at. A lot of these students are at these high power schools because someone made a phone call

The UT system is one of the best in the nation, right behind the UC-system and the the SUNY-system.

I believe if we did this we'd have a stronger black middle class honestly.

The decimation of that has created the wider gap between rich and poor which has made it harder for those in poverty, or those who are from working class poor families to make it upward.

As well brain drain of the middle class, meaning kids going off to college leaving their home towns behind when they could stay around and help build the local economies.
