"What it was is that I just had a bunch of knuckleheads around me, that was pretty much it," he said.

"I just went through a place of just trying to figure it out. You have to figure out what you're OK with and what you're not OK with, and you have to test the waters.

"I just happened to be in the spotlight in front of the cameras all the time, and they caught all those moments," the 21-year-old admitted.

The star also talked about his recent performance at the VMAs, where he became extremely emotional, fighting back tears.
