He was able to do that because he wasn't in Robin Thicke's position. Had that been him, he would have been on that same 'I had nothing to do with it' excuse. Its real easy to defend people when you're not apart of the controversy yourself.

There's a difference between defending someone who agreed to let you expose her breast on worldwide TV for a halftime show and defending some white girl who is trying way too hard to be rebellious and controversial. The 2 situations aren't really the same.

Yes, Justin is very much an equal opportunity under the bus thrower. The point is, he could have defended Janet after the media hounded her (while his part in the performance was largely ignored) instead of saying the whole thing was her fault. This is not about a woman, its about being a decent person to your friend and idol. The gender of said person is irrelevant.
