we just lost R&B :(

No we didn't because it's not an R&B album. You think when the grammys role around this is going to be in the R&B category? Only reason people think this is an r&b album is because Timaland produced it. I dont think Timberlake's last album was considered an r&B album.

Most of what you said was on point; but a there were a few things that you alluded to that paints timberlake as a culture copycat and not so much a theif. Like wearing the cornrows, the style of dress. I think he made calculated moves to get more Black people into his music, like putting 50 and T.I. and now Jay-Z on a track. I think he makes to hard of an effort to prove that he's hip, and it comes across as corny. Almost like he's reverse kooning in order to show people he's down. I think that is what irritates people the most.

That, and the fact that people are going ape shyt because a pop star that's been in the industry for over 20 years and already has a fan base of millions decides to make a POP record after a hiatus and promotes the album practically everywhere except the Nation of Islam's Saviours' Day.

If he didn't sell a million the first week, I would've been more surprised.

that's actually the point that i was getting at. what he's doing is nothing but calculated moves so he doesn't get called out on the bs that he's doing.

Just to put Justin's first week numbers in perspective:

1) Since SoundScan started tracking data in 1991, there have only been 31 instances where an album sold more than 850,000 copies in a single week.

2) The all-time best-selling week was when Timberlake's former group, 'N Sync, saw its "No Strings Attached" album debut with 2.42 million at No. 1 on the April 8, 2000 Billboard 200 chart

3) In the late '00s and into the '10s, enormous sales weeks became less frequent, as more people opted to stream albums or purchase digital tracks

4) since 2005, there have just been eight weeks where an album did 850,000-plus. All seven of them did so in their debut frames: 50 Cent's "The Massacre" (1.14 million; March 19, 2005), Kanye West's "Late Registration" (860,000; Sept. 17, 2005), West's "Graduation" (957,000; Sept. 29, 2007), Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" (1.01 million; June 28, 2008), Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" (1.05 million; Nov. 13, 2010), Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" (1.11 million, June 11, 2011), Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" (964,000; Sept. 17, 2011) and Swift's "Red" (1.21 million; Nov. 10, 2012).

But people on here shyt on Justin but big up Thicke when he's done the same thing.

He put TI, Jay and Wayne on tracks. He redid a song from his first album, Shooter and put Wayne on it.

Dude looked like the dude that worked at a coffee shop while getting a masters in English

didn't sell shyt. Cut his hair, started wearing suits, had brazilian chicks dancing in his videos with Pharrell and put his black wife in a video.

I mean this thread has turned into people complaining that an entertainer is doing things to stay relevant. Not doing something controversial like a sextape, reality shows or dumb shyt, but doing stuff to stay on top of the game. Is he supposed to be making the same music he was making when he was 16 and in a boy band?

Thicke comes across as more authentic, if you can find me a pic of him with cornrows or beaded bandanas or some other "hip hop" clothing element, then you would have a valid point. timberlake comes across as a try-hard. He wanted to dress the part then because someone told him it was a cool look. They were wrong. The issue is that people have the false notion that timberlake makes r&b music when in actuality, he makes pop music, produced by people that used to do r&b.

I'm not faulting timberlake or timbaland for what they are doing to stay relevant. But people need to be more informed about what they are listening to, because they aren't listening to a r&b album. He's not saving r&b, He's a pop star that makes pop records. He is basically doing what timbaland was doing with Ginuwine and Aaliyah 10 years ago, except with a slightly broader pop feel, appeal to it.

People should enjoy timberlake's music if they feel the need. Since I've been on the Coli, I never saw a thread about someone clamoring for a new timberlake album; but once he put one out after 7 years, people are going overboard talking about it's the best r&b album they have ever heard.

The marketing of this album has made it into an event, but just like any overhyped event, it never lives up to the anticipation. People are already wanting the new album to come out in Nov. Which goes to show you that this album isn't what they wanted it to be or else they would just sit back and enjoy this one until Nov.

That first point has nothing to do with anything. There was a point where cornrows and bandannas were in. There are pictures of artists like J.Lo and Christina Aguilera wearing cornrows and bandannas (especially the ones with the rhine stones) and neither of them were Hip Hop artists. It's a look that Ja Rule, Mystikal, Petey Pablo, Luda popularized because they rocked it consistently. In the early 00's, rocking cornrows and bandannas was popular. It was a trend.

Who cares if people consider JT an R&B artist. That's not even the issue. The big issue is that Justin Timberlake is popular. Justin's solos and even as far back as N'sync's "Gone" have all had an R&B feel even though he and his group N'sync are Pop artists. If his album were flopping, whether his album was Pop or R&B wouldn't even be an issue.

People have been posting about Justin Timberlake on this site since the summer. There was that one thread about Futuresex/Lovesounds being better than anything Drake put out.

As far as this album being an event, yes it's an event. It's an event because one of the biggest Pop stars just released his first album in 7 years. Whether it lived up to the hype or not is the opinion of each individual listener.

The best comment from your whole post was 20/20 Experience is like what Timbaland was doing with Aaliyah and Ginuwine, only JT's album is more Pop. That's a large part of the appeal. It's even mentioned in a lot of the reviews. As much as this was a return for JT, it's also a return of sorts for Timbaland as an elite producer. A lot of people wrote him off, but people jumped back on the bandwagon after JT's album leaked.
