They will easily make that money back over the next few years.

Spotify's revenue is irrelevant. They paid out over 7 billion in royalties last year to artist and labels. That just 1 service. Apple music etc all pay out.

Add in licenses for use in TV, movies, commercial and video games publishing is very lucrative.
Streaming makes up 80% of all music industry revenue. Spotify has over 30% marketshare in the streaming music industry. Spotify has failed to make a profit any year of its existence. So you have companies like Hipgnosis overpaying for marketshare, with their ROI hinged upon companies like Spotify overpaying for marketshare. The entire music industry is in a massive bubble. I guarantee Timberlake's financial advisors told him to take the cash now, because he's going to have the opportunity to buy it back for pennies on the dollar when the bubble pops. Its not that consumers aren't buying music like they did in the 90s, they simply don't care about music the way they did in the 90s.

All this catalog buying seems shady.
Sting - $300M
Springsteen - $500M
Timberlake - $100M
Bob Dylan - $400M
Stevie Nicks - $100M
Neil Young - $150M
Mick Fleetwood - $80M
etc, etc.

Spotify generated less than $10 Billion in revenue for 2021. So how are companies like Hipgnosis going to recoup their money? This is a bubble and the 401k plans invested in these companies will pay heavily for it.
It wouldn’t be American capitalism if people weren’t getting fukked over left and right

If course 100M seems low considering what we've seen in the last 20 years. But as some say we don't know the structure.

Ain't Drake's new deal 500M alone? Drake's new music is worth 5 times everything Justin has done so far?
Drake's deal is for more than just music and is basically a package to provide opportunity for other artists.

Because you would have the 100m and the catalogue. But I understand, sometimes you just wanna cash out :manny:
Oh i completely agree with you, but i’m sure at this point he’s ready to transition into other types of work that don’t involve touring. I think he has kids now so i’m sure that changed things.

Every artist should sell now. People are finding music less and less valuable by the day. 100 million is highway robbery by him. Companies wont be offering anything near this in the following decade.

Certainly is and you know they’ve knocked on literally every name brand artist’s doors asking to sell.

Some of these acts that sold know that their best days are wayyyyyyy behind them so why not cash out while Hipgnosis is throwing around numbers like Zillow.

I’m curious to see which artists they are either low balling or not giving any attention to. You don’t see any rap/R&B artists doing this so either they aren’t getting offers or their catalogs have too many hands on them as is.

I think the money is about right.
No way he owns 100% of FutureSexLoveSongs or 20/20 which is his biggest albums. I'm sure Timberland owns atleast 25% of those.
I doubt he see anything from the 'NSync catalog. They didn't write any of those songs.
He probably doesn't want to tour or work hard anymore when he can cash out and do what he wants.

This.

Timbo, Pharrell and Chad (and Danja) literally wrote/produced the bulk of his solo stuff and once these producers are doing over half of your project, they are getting points and percentages.

Producers on that level are taking every dollar they earned and making sure the paperwork is rightfully legit.

And he and the other dudes in NSync didn’t do shyt except sing so all of the folks behind the scenes who did everything are eating well + his manager + whatever funky deal Lou roped them into.

Plus you already know those dudes signed a weirdo slave deal as kids. Justin couldn’t wait to run away but the label made sure he didn’t run too far and gave him a deal.
