growing up there are just certain names I’ll never forget...michael griffith yusef hawkins...amadou diallo and abner louima...louima survived and even won a hefty lawsuit but I can’t even imagine the mental scars he bears
I don’t think I could find forgiveness in my heart. Why is it that they always go straight to sodomy? You already stomped him out. NYPD attracts some real sickos
Rudy Guiliani rode into office largely based on racial backlash against the first Black mayor of NYC. The late David Dinkins. Rudy campaigned to and got the support of large % of the NYPD by appealing to the resentment that the racist element had to being under a Black mayor and the Black police commissioner he appointed.
Once he got in office, Rudy emboldened the racists on the police force in that era by seeming to always defend cops after brutality or murder allegations.
He would leak the sealed juvenile records of a person who was murdered by the cop, like Patrick Dorismond
He even lowered the requirements for cops, and a flood of working class white guys who otherwise couldn't have qualified became police officers under him.
When the story first broke, reports said that Louima said that Volpe or the other cop said "It's Guiliani time" as they were assaulting/torturing him. Not sure if he walked that part back, but that part was included when the story went national. Put a spotlight on Rudy for enabling and encouraging the police culture where sadistic actions like this took place.
Cops who committed these acts are responsible for their actions, but the mayor was a big part of the problem
I remember this story but I didn't realize the cop was still locked up. One of the few times I can recall a police officer, in particular a NYPD officer, getting serious prison time for police brutality.
Facts, this one and Amadou Diallo (in my mind it was 41 shots). I guess for the younger generation it will be Sean Bell, Eric Garner, and all off the other cases that happen outside of New York.
Now with the internet you are exposed to so much more, and get to see everything all the time (for better and for worse).
