It's extremely long hours, terrible pay (magnified when you compare it to other areas in law) and a completely thankless job. and steer you in another direction. I have a homegirl who just finished her first year of law school right now. She wanted to be a public defender going in. Her advisors threw that idea in the bushes and now she's specializing in patent law. I say this to say public defenders are, for the most part, the bottom of the barrel anyway.
