I always said I wasn't a huge fan of the WOAT tag to begin with because it seems counterproductive.
"Hall Of Shame" is a much more harsh banner IMO. Not sure if this was Cook's way of getting the community to police itself better or what.

The hall of shame tag just came into effect tho, right? If that's so, shouldn't hte current users have to hold that L for a year from it's inception rather than just lose it immediately upon the new year "winners"?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question.
The way the Hall of Shame/Fame banners work is if you've ever won either one, the banner is under your name permanently.
The 2016 winners will have Poster of the year or Woat under their name for a year, when the new ones are selected those banners will be replaced with Hall of Fame or Hall of Shame respectively.

I think it's a bit harsh for the losers but
