This past season of New York Fashion Week, rapper-slash-fashion guru Kanye West debuted his first show at New York Fashion Weekin partnership with Adidas Originals.
For the star, the collaboration (and all the spandex therein) was a long time coming. For the rest of us, it was an interesting style surprise. To celebrate the his new gig, he sat down with the New York Times‘s fashion magazine, T, to share his style inspiration, what it was like meeting his fashion idol and more.

The 37-year-old always hoped to make it in the industry. “I dreamed, since I was a little kid, of having my own store where I could curate every shoe, sweatshirt and color,” he told T magazine in the seven-page fashion spread. “I have sketches of it. I cried over the idea of having my own store.”
But until he had a family of his own (including personal fashion mannequin Kim Kardashian), it all seemed like a dream. “I feel like now I have an amazing wife, a super-smart child and the opportunity to create in two major fields,” he said. “Before I had those outlets, my ego was all I had.”
Lest you think his ego has not abated, let West tell you a fable: “I have this table in my new house,” he says in the interview. “They put this table in without asking. It was some weird nouveau riche marble table, and I hated it. But it was literally so heavy that it took a crane to move it. We would try to set up different things around it, but it never really worked. I realized that table was my ego. No matter what you put around it, under it, no matter who photographed it, the douchebaggery would always come through.”

And to those calling West’s fashion derivative, he’s one step ahead of you. “I would like to be influenced as much as possible,”’ he said. “I don’t care if you can see the influence in something, as long as I made it better.”
Though West prefers to be his own biggest fan and idol, even he admitted to feeling starstruck after meeting fellow designer Ralph Lauren. The two even had a photo snapped together, which showed Lauren placing his hand on the rapper’s cheek. “Do you know what he said when he did that? ‘This is my son,'” West said of the embrace. “And I was thinking, ‘I knew it! I knew Ralph was my daddy!'”
