My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved

he's 100% right, of course, you can't talk about slavery or the holocaust in the respective communities

and there's several dynamics at play here but we were mentally (not just physically) enslaved , which kept us in line most of the time. And what keeps some of us in line now for the most part.
