This isn't Kanye putting on for the culture. It's Kanye putting on. This is kind of a door that he opened. He spent all that time seeking validation from the Grammys and the publications that he's now slamming. Why place all that attention on a Grammy when we have our own awards shows and publications? I'm not sure if he even acknowledged the 5 mic rating MBDTF got from The Source or the XXL ratings he's gotten from XXL. He brags about the Grammys he's gotten, but what about the BET Awards he's gotten? BET gives him the platform to open their show and he's only performed two or three times at the Grammys. The problem isn't their treatment of Black creativity. The problem is how little value we place on our people when we honor our own for our work.

:laff:at making the Grammys culturally relevant again. We watch the Grammys, but since when has the Grammys been culturally relevant.

And yes, the Grammys are out of touch.
It is not an either or proposition. This is a dodge. You can apply this logic to the OscarsSoWhite complaint.

You can't apply that to the OscarsSoWhite because Black people are being nominated for Grammys in the major categories. The Oscars are shutting Blacks out of those categories. Black actors aren't even being nominated in those categories.

It's not a dodge. Kanye was putting on for the Grammys even going as far as making sure his albums met the deadline. They didn't nominate MBDTF or WTT, yet he still continued to attend.

Black people get ceremonious votes at the Grammys. They only win the "black awards." No hip hop song has ever won song of the year. Beyonce has never won album of the year as a pop star and her last album was more critically acclaimed that Swift's this year. I can go on and on. Outkast did not win until they went "beyond hip hop" and Lauryn HIll's album was classified as R and B. If a black person wins the major categories at the Grammys they are a "certain type" of black person. They are the older more respectable type doing "respectable" music.

There's more to Black music than just Hip Hop and no I don't think it's fair that Hip Hop artists haven't won more in major categories. If you're winning an award in a major category such as Album or Song of the Year, it's no longer a genre specific award. That means it transcended and went beyond it's respective genre which is why Lauryn and Kast won.

Beyonce and several other Black artists fit a "certain type of Black person" than Kast or Lauryn Hill.
