you can't stay on the same lane forever
its not even about that breh. I used to think of 'ye as a true artist. His music had a message, now it's 5 dikk jokes a verse and ghostwriters. Plus his personality is so :beli: now. I really think his mother's death had a huge impact on him (as it should but... in a negative way)

Yeah, Dame at one point was planning on doing a Kanye West Chronic/Soul Survivor/1st Infantry type album, with all the Rocafella dudes rapping on all Kanye's beats. Kanye would've rapped on there too, but the showcase was definitely meant to be for Jay, Cam, Beans, Bleek, Free, etc.

I think Kanye even said somewhere that Dame was like "If my verses sucked he was just gonna erase them and put Cam'ron verses instead."

He says all of this on Last Call

anyone know what kanye was using to record? never seen that before
He has a story about his things on Juan Epstein I forgot what it was, but you'd probably find out if you listen to the podcast.. Which is the only dope interview he's done in the past few campaigning months.

damn thats crazy, to me kanye has always been a mid level rapper but to not let him rap is kinda mad

I was thinking the same thing, but then I think it's really hard to actually go back and think about what the culture was like at the time. Rocafella was all about Dipset and State Property and even Jay was still throwing out raps about the newest guns (Heckler & Koch got a lot of plug on The Black Album), drugs, and money talk. That blue collar everyday rap hadn't caught on in mainstream hip-hop. Cats like Little Brother and Slum Village were doing it, and the Rawkus type of cats were getting some more exposure, but even though Kweli helped put on Kanye...Kanye kind of returned the favor and helped dudes like him get more exposure in the mainstream. Just my 2 cents.

It does seem crazy to me now that they didn't really want him rapping like that.

This thread made me look up these old ass Kanye beat tapes. Some of these are not actually as dope as I remembered, but it was still a cool trip down memory lane to check these out today:

"Last week I was stumbling through my garage, searching through old storage bins when I came across some old beat CDs from my days as a signed rapper. I was shocked to find that two of them, both given to me in the year 2001, had the name 'Kanye West' on them. I remember Kanye being hyped to me as someone who had just worked with Beanie Sigel and was about to work with Ludacris, so I was obviously interested in this dude with a weird name. I popped in the CD and wasn't exactly blown away to be honest. It was definitely good though, so I asked my manager for more beats from this Kanye character. I got a second beat CD and again couldn't find anything to pick directly, but knew there was potential (keep in mind that 2001 was a mighty synth-y year). I got on the phone with Kanye that week and he played me some beats over the phone (that included "H to the Izzo"). I picked one song from that phone call and it ended up being one of the first label paychecks written with his name on it. (I also was the first person to rap his name in a song. Because 'Kanye' rhymed with 'picante').

These two beat CDs, now celebrating their 10 year anniversary and I believe the oldest Kanye beats ever released, are here for your enjoyment. We wanted you to hear these not just for the Kanye completist inside you, but for people to understand how far someone like Kanye has come. I distinctly remember him talking about rapping himself and hoping to break out of the box that was hip-hop. He told me how big of a Jim Morrison fan he was and how he wanted to sample something from him (that happened and hurt Nas bad), and even played me a song where he used only movie titles in the verses (that didn't happen, which is good cause it was awkward). And I think these two beat CDs show you where he came from, even if it doesn't necessarily sound like "Kanye" now. He kept at it and became the incredible producer he is today. I remember he even had to leave the studio sessions early, so he could make the last train back to his mom's house. He's come a long way, and I'm proud to have been around, even if for just a second at the start.

If I was super inspirational, I'd tell you guys to stick with it also, and maybe you can become a multi-platinum superstar, but I won't, cause honestly - your beats probably suck."

Yeah man he was always arrogant as hell. In 2002 he signed my Blueprint CD, and this dude took out the booklet, went through it, circled every single song that he produced and ALSO circled his own name where it said "produced by"...maybe you're wondering what he did about the Girls Girls Girls Remix, which wasn't listed in the liner notes?

He actually took the sharpie, found a blank spot in the booklet, and wrote out Girls Girls Girls Remix - produced by Kanye West, AND THEN circled THAT. I swear I need to find that and upload the picture here.

Keep in mind not a damn person that wasn't a hip-hop head knew who he was at this point. he was just some goofy dude walking around in jeans and a polo shirt wearing that Louis Vatton (spelling?) backpack filled with CDs. He did have on the Rocafella chain though. He also kept asking me why my nickname was White Mike even though Mike isn't my name.

Later that day he recorded this song (which is underrated):

Not to keep turning this into a Nostalgia thread, but I remember being surprised when I found out Kanye did the beat for Stand Up.

Jay killed that beat when they retired the old booth on the Basement too
