I'd not put Kanye above Pink Floyd personally but I don't know why anyone would be afraid to do that. They have about 3-4 undeniable classics, a few dope and about 8 mediocre albums. 2 of those classics are to me on another level but that doesn't mean that they have to be to everyone.

No we can't, I'm going by hiphop heads here for Kanye and rock heads for PF. The big difference is addressed in this thread, strict hiphop heads are not commenting on what they think about other genres. If they did they might've given The wall or something 3.5/5 for all I know.

here's the issue for me. I'm all for rewarding hip-hop artists on the level as legends of other genres that are more well established e.g. rock, rnb etc.

BUT, at least the pre-requisite to be a great rap artist or to have a classic rap album is to demonstrate lyricism at the highest level, because that is rap's calling card so to speak. Hip-hop artists aren't required to sing, play instruments etc., so the very least is at least enforce great songwriting and lyricism to back it up. Because we all know artists of other genres can't manipulate words the way rap artists have, so they got that advantage in that sense.

Kanye's lyrics are not only mediocre and amateurish especially towards the latter stages of his career, but most of his shyt ain't even written by him.

His production is admittedly excellent, that is his main strength. But even so we can't just rely on production or else just gimme an album of instrumentals. Even so, even his production isn't fully handled by himself.

That's why I can't put Kanye EVER on a Dylan level or PF or Michael Jackson etc., but I'll happily put Ghostface there, or Ice Cube or some of the elite hip-hop talents like Nas etc.
