Of course the South was always gonna do they thing, but the hard hitting 808s being a staple during the whole of the 2010s was trendy to mainstream hip hop after 808s and Heartbreak. I can't think of any other mainstream hip hop artist of Kanye status (at the time) in the west or south that helped put it on the mainstream as much as Kanye did at the time
In fact, Kanye putting the official stamp on that sonic helped solidify the South being recognized as the official new home of hip hop being that, as you said, they been on that wave
