So when the legend lends his opinion on hoops, it carries great weight — at least, more than that of some blowhard arguing with friends and strangers at a bar.
Near the end of a recent sit down with Tyler Cowen as part of the "Conversations with Tyler" series at George Mason University, an audience member asked Abdul-Jabbar a question basketball fans have debated for years: Kobe Bryant's career, or Tim Duncan's?
"Jeez, I would say that Tim Duncan has had a better career just because they've been able to win more consistently, and they didn't have to rely on Tim all the time," the Hall of Famer replied.
Kobe has worn his body out. He's only like 36 years old, and he's worn his body out. It's falling apart because of the stress that he had to do just taking on the load that he did, but he wanted to do it that way. That was that."
There's no right or wrong answer here, but hearing the former Lakers great speak so highly of Duncan must be sweet music to the ears of Spurs fans.
