One thing made crystal clear by this situation is when it comes to throwing hands, you HAVE to not only know how to do it, but treat it like you would pulling a pistol: Don't pull it if you aint gonna use it. IF you are going to punch a man, punch with intent to flatten him, not the "pap pap pap" then bounce and square up shyt. If you aren't willing to basically break your hand and wrist to collapse a man's jaw, don't swing. I almost feel like he knew the gun was there and if you even suspect a man has something he wants to use, you are fighting for your life, not to tune him up.
