96 was 18 years ago...I went to my first yankee game in 95 and been loving the team and sport of baseball ever since. To say im not a real yankee fan because of that is not really fair. I can understand Mattingly having some NY respect like Ewing for the Knicks but if Melo brought NY that first ring in decades dude would immediately jumper over some Knick legends as the top dawg.
I lived through both eras bro. I'm not questioning you as a Yankee fan, but the loudest the stadium EVER been was when Mattingly hit that homer in the playoffs. He was more loved than Jeter. I'm old enough to live through both their heydays

Too many great Yankee playoff moment for me to agree with that statement....different generation got their different respectable players I guess.

The backlash against Jeter is overwhelmingly due to jealousy. Period. The absurdity of people being upset that a player who is arguably top 3 at his position all time is being slurped in his last season is self-evident.

And I say that as someone who thinks he should've retired last year.

Sorry...I actually lives through both. You haven't. How can you counter what you didn't experience?

I like Olbermann but dude's rant was totally unneeded

As a big Yankees fan myself, there's NOTHING more you can ask from Jeter. damn near 20 years with one team, 5 rings, no roids, no scandals, highly entertaining

The people who say Jeter is the best ever are either young kids who only watched the Yankees during the dynasty years or their parents who really hate all the steroid era guys and appreciate that Jeter never had to cheat.

He's the unquestioned face of the last 20 years of Yankee baseball, but hardly the best player.

The Derek Jeter chants during every AB have really worn on me whenever I'm there, especially when it's immediately followed up with a ground out. Personally I appreciate Jeter, but I was more invested in the Mo stuff.
