This is so true b/c if you think about it back in the day the R&B chics had a specific look and sound (Destiny's Child, Mariah, Monica, Brandy, Faith, Chante Moore, 702...). Kelis broke that with her debut and her single in 99. I think the label heads were confused and didn't know how to market her. I mean chics are just now starting to jack her look from back then. She low key created a lane that most were afraid to follow and didn't get picked until years later. Now most of these chics trying to follow in her footsteps but can barely make a good album let alone 3 great to damn good albums like she did. And most importantly she could actually sing.
