As far as his image being carefully crafted goes that's true of pretty much everyone in music for the last 100 years. Having an image or story to sell is just as inportant as the actual music. Just because one seems more authentic doesn't mean it's anyless fake.

Kendrick's entire media appeal is carefully crafted because he has a marginally positive image and gets pushed to the forefront cause he's stylistically just a "rapper"

That's Kendrick's latest score on Metacritic from "Listeners of Kendrick" you can't rig something like that. Either the fans are going to hate it or dig it. Metacritic is a tough platform for reviews of anything music related.
