In no way am I dismissing MB's murder as okay. However, only a fool deals in absoloutes. MB seemed to have had a chip on his shoulder per the surveillance video from the corner store. Did he strong arm the cigarello's? I dont know. But ask yourself, Why was he walkin in the middle of the street anyway? That neighborhood clearly has sidewalks. I know that somebody has experienced driving home from work or whatever and then all of a sudden u gotta stop to allow nikkas to move out the middle of the street & then they mean mug u, like u did somethin wrong. I think that the MB situation was a case of typical nikka shvt Vs. Typical Rascist shvt. But in this case, the rascist happened to be protected by the system of white supremacy.

Do I have a bit of self hate? Maybe, I dont know. I just hate the fact that my people refuse to unite and love one another regardless of complexion, sexual orientation, material assests, preferred drugs of choice, & the blocks that they grew up on. Look at the popular black music & what it represents. Look at the TV shows we watch. Look at the type of women we put on a pedestal. Scroll down your facebook timeline & look at all the messages thats out there. Lite skin vs Darkskin & all this other bullshvt. We being programmed and dont even know it. Yes, whites do they same thing, but here's the catch; black people only make up about 14% of the USA & Only 6% of that is black males. While the white "race" makes up about 72% of the USA making them the overwhelming majority and thus giving them control.

I quoted "race" because thats another illusion that they put infront of us and we dont even realize it. Genetically all humans are the same. Its a scientific fact that all people originated from black pigmented people. there is no difference between an african albino & a caucasion american. But they wont tell u that. The truth is that we're all slaves to this system. We need to open our minds and live in our purpose, thats the key to freedom. When we finally wake up, everything will change. The system has no love for either side only for Money & Power. They do white people even worse if u really look at it. Just think, Slaves had the right to vote before the white woman did. Bottom line, is we all need to unplug and love one another regardless of color or creed, because theres a big game being played here and we're all pawns until we remove ourselves from the board.

Just look at the subconscious effect that the word "black people" & "white people" has on the physce. I dont wanna keep rantin but I just wanted to respnd to the homies that had an intelligent rebuttle... Its all a game tho people. We gotta wake up.

I've typed a lot in regards to this so I won't go into extra detail, and I"m def not reading a cacplex article especially seeing how some people are already pointing out some key problems with the tone of it, but:

- We gotta remember we are reading what the journalist wanted to single out. There have been many a time where something will get plucked from an interview and made into a headline without the full context.

- The lead in to the excerpt had Kendrick remarking on his troubled past and run-ins with the cops and the kind of mentality that would have one gravitate toward destructive shyt..like strong arming shop owners. We don't get to read what was said between recounting his personal experiences and being asked about Mike Brown, but I would assume that he was relating the circumstances to his own.

- When he said what he said, I don't think he was addressing the entire black populace, but the kids who stood in his place at one point who clearly didn't value themselves enough due to their upbringing. Saying that starting at home and from "within" and getting right with how we see ourselves could prevent avoidable situations like Tamir Rice is something I agree with wholeheartedly. This doesn't negative racism, prejudice or disproportionate sentencing within the justice (if you can call it that) system but it is something that is far more within our control than the media, the cops or white peoples perceptions. I would think that should be a priority above all else in any legitimate effort to challenge white supremacy in any way that is sustainable.
Sun, all you are saying is well and good. until you realize Non of that would necessarily save Mike brown or T.rice. Why? ask yourself this question. Does stealing a pack of swishers = DEATH

YES OR NO
if the answer is NO for a white kid, then it should be No for all of us(every color)

Does standing outside slangin Cigs = DEATH when its white people? NO
then it shouldnt equal death for anyone else.

When White people say blacks are so lazy and blah blah blah. lets assume they are 100% accurate in their depiction of blacks. Does being lazy mean its OK to mistreat and kill These lazy people? YES OR NO

If the answer is NO when its a white person. Then well the answer should be NO across the board.

This is what is always missed when black folks start trying to talk to other blacks about what WE need to do to help ourselves.. in a public area.

Dont DO THAT. have that talk on the low. shoot that thru your music if you want it to get out to the masses.

But you have to always realize. nothing you do will stop US from being mistreated by THEM. say it with me. NOTHING MY BLACK A>>> can do to stop That white man from mistreating me. I can be a professional degree holding suit and tie wearing, proper talking brotha. and yet and still. The white man will mistreat me at some point in my life. Its a foregone conclusion. Its not a matter of IF, its WHEN will i catch that Cism and White supremacy.

The mere fact that kendric and other blacks believe its even a 50% our part and 50% their part(white folks). Tells me most of us are still lost in the sauce so to speak. we dont get it. its like 20% our part, and 80% theirs. They have created what you see in the ghettos. THEY did that systematically. They have created what you see in the jails. THEY DID THAT systematically. They have created dark skin bros hating on light skin bros and dark skin bros hating on one another, while also hating on dark skin women.

We didnt create this system. THEY DID, we dont keep this system alive. They DO. we have had instance throughout our history in the US where we have switched it up and got that group economics thing popping and got our education on, looked good when we walked down the street. wasnt hanging out acting crazy. Black Wall street anyone???? And you see how THEY treated us in the end.

They do not WANT us to ever climb up out of the system. If we do, it will make them have to EARN everything they have/get. Why would you do that to yourself when you can situp and work half as hard as a person of color but gain 3 times as much. why give that up? you wouldnt unless you were some really righteous person. its obvious they're not that righteous in general(not all). So here we are within a system of oppression.

What i'm telling you is something you may not want to hear. Unless they white folks that have most of the weapons in this country(the armed forces are still majority white). Until they become righteous. They will never give black people their due. and they will continue to setup a system where black people cant even earn their due by the masses. sure a few can but not MOST of us or even half of us. not going to be allowed. And since thats the case. it will continue to stress out black people. stress messes with your mental and physical health. mental: why youngins always say "i dont care" when they actually do.. you see youngins fighting & shooting all the time..worrying about who has the best clothes even though all of you are super broke and shouldnt even be wearing $200 jordan's.
physical : we out of shape, way out of shape the moment we get out of our youth, we over weight, broken down with a limp at 40 not 70, but 40. We got high blood pressure(stress and bad foods).. we eating that crap food to cope with our wack life.. its feel good food just like a feel good drug. we're doing drugs to cope with our wack life within this system.

In reality, not a dream. but reality. this will continue until the opressor takes his foot off of our necks, or until we leave here and go to another location where we will be treated properly(dont know if this place exists seeing that the european has colonized darn near every where and their white is good dark is bad mentality is all up within those colonized places cultures.

All the soul searching wouldnt fix this. being oppressed like this causes what you see. Not the other way around.

Keep traumatizing a victim while you're telling him or her to pull themselves up by their boot straps.

keep raping a woman as she's an adult that was molested 50 times as a child. while telling her she's too promiscuous and its her fault she has 10 babies by 20 different daddy's.
Did she really make a choice. or was the choice darn near forced on her?

now if some black folks want to come with some strategic plans on how to get the white man to take his foot off of our necks. then speak now.but if that aint the discussion. all other points are MOOT.

Some unarmed white man got killed at an animal shelter turning an animal in because he tried to do so without showing ID and got confrontational with a pig. Dead ass wrong...but avoidable...Tamir outside waving a toy gun with the orange plug removed that makes it look even more real? fukked up...but avoidable. And that's on top of the actual overtly crooked shyt the U.S. gestapo does aside from just being conditioned to fear "black" through our language and culture.

Again this doesn't remove the concern from outside sources completely but making the fortification of mind a priority not only puts you in a state to be able to see the solutions you seek but also influences and informs how you move in the now and into the future. If slavery has become covert and more mental it only makes sense that the keys to the locks are within the psyche.

I think the rape analogy you used was perfect. Rape victims can't live in a world where men (or whoever) don't exist, they either have to live in a shell or undergo a healing and self empowerment to walk tall again after such a thing. They can't make demands from the "patriarchy" from a place of powerlessness, they have to build themselves up...not to be "respectable" or to be seen better by anybody, but to be able to feel whole again. I know what it's like to not feel whole. I know what it's like to try to navigate this world without a complete map. And regardless of how I got lost, no matter how many people I can list to be held responsible for my upbringing, i'm still the only one who has the ability to respond to my circumstances from where i'm standing. White folks could do a 180 tomorrow and i'm still going to have to deal with me, who I have grown to be and who I choose to be moving forward.

the rap victim analogy i used wasnt real in america. there shouldnt be any women in america that has been molested 100's of times as a child and is getting raped a ton of times as a woman. I put those ridiculous numbers for a reason. because thats exactly what has happened to black people and what is currently happening now to black people.

We were the victims, and while we tried to heal from our wounds, we are still currently the victims of new rape. thats why the bootstraps stuff is nonsense. Its why the "we need to do some soul searching " is only some what true.

its not on us. its on THEM. we can soul search all we like. it wont change at thing in the grand scheme of things. what i'm telling you is this. Its wishful thinking at best to believe a person thats been this victimized and keeps getting victimized will be able to no longer show residual affects of victimization. it goes had in hand. thats like saying if all shoulders talked out their problems non of them would come home with PTSD> thats a lie. WAR is WAR. as long as WAR is WAR. PTSD will be PTSD.

if white folks did a 180. guess what. black folks will finally have the ability to thrive outside of victim hood. Thats the key. you cant expect a victim that was hurt in the past and keeps being hurt(not fault of his own) to be some great person. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN (on average). it will never happen for most of black folks unless the white man takes his foot off of black folks necks. Its that simple. Then and only then can black people heal FIRST, then start coming up with a strategy on how they are going to grow out of their issues they USE to have.

let me make it easier for you. lets say you're afraid of earthquakes like every normal human being is.

you are at home and bam a 10.0 hits. kills up a lot of people you know. it takes 5 years for you to rebuild and some what feel normal. while you're trying to heal up. 20 more super quakes hit. You will never stop feeling jittery. You will never be able to heal up. shoot you wont even have time to morn the death of your loved ones because you're to busy trying to get thru the day and from one super quake to the next. This is a black persons life under white supremacy in a nutshell.

and speaking on the white man example. nope bad example/analogy. its not the same. some things can be avoided. like a white man getting shot for waving a toy gun at the cops. just dont wave toy guns and bam white man is alive 99.9% of the time. Not so for black men. black guy in walmart purchasing a product they sell in walmart, in an open carry state. Yet he gets shot up. explain that one to me????

You cant. because there is no explanation for pure hate but ... its pure hate. There is no example of pure hate like that unless you want to start talking holocaust, etc.

@SunZoo

just remember, black folks were being hung in a time where we were not twerking and shooting/killing one another. WHY? it had nothing to do with soul searching on blacks part. its on the white man with his foot on the black mans neck. thats it and thats all. This is what most people that think like that doesnt remember. Black people had themselves together as a collective. and yet and still. white folks were treating us like sh.... and killing us. So that tells me, NO matter what i do, i cant stop them from treating me like ishh or trying to kill me. Its something THEY have to do.

no..you still dont believe me.
Exhibit A. (remember this is an old article from 12/30/2011)

Racism behind questioning of black professionals
Although a new year has arrived, some of America's deepest problems endure. One is the presumed inferiority of black professionals who are not entertainers or jocks, despite the 2008 election of our first black president.

I was reminded of this problem in a Dec. 17 article in the Times about the Pinellas County school district's "critical shortage" of black teachers, a legal status meaning that the number of black teachers is two or more percentage points below the percentage of black students.

In 2000, a court ordered the district to make a real effort to do better, but the district has not done better. Statistics at the end of 2010 indicate that while 18.8 percent of the district's students were black, only 7.6 percent of teachers were black.

The theory behind the proposal to increase the number of black teachers comes from studies suggesting that many black students perform better with black teachers. Educators and elected officials who have sincere motives should find nothing wrong with trying to hire more black teachers if their presence can make a positive difference.

But many white people cannot control the tendency to automatically question the qualifications of blacks. School Board member Carol Cook, for example, did not equivocate when she reminded her peers that quality should be the primary focus as the district attempts to comply with the order to hire more black teachers.

"I have some (concern) just because of the nature of the agreement," the Times quoted her as saying. "I don't want to turn it into hiring anybody (just) because of the color of their skin."

At first blush, Cook's comment might seem innocuous. It is not. Why is the issue of quality reserved for blacks? How often has Cook or other white board members questioned the qualifications of white prospects in such a demeaning way?

Too many white Americans continue to believe, either consciously or subconsciously, that blacks are inferior or incompetent even though these same whites are familiar with many highly capable and effective and beloved black teachers. As far as I know, black teachers attend the same colleges of education whites attend, sit for the same certification exams and are evaluated the same.

I cannot help but conclude that racism is at work. And racism is not exclusive to the teaching profession or even one race's views of blacks. It is in most areas in which so-called meritocracy supposedly is practiced.

I discussed Cook's comment with Goliath Davis, St. Petersburg's first black police chief. He said that he, too, was offended, and he discussed his experience with the qualification issue when he became chief in 1997.

Many whites — especially police officers — claimed that Davis was not qualified for the job, obviously disregarding pertinent facts: Davis had been on the force since 1974 and had served with distinction as division chief of training and research, deputy chief and assistant chief.

Perhaps the most pernicious rumor against the first black chief was that his degrees were from mail-order schools. The truth, of course, is that he had earned a bachelor's degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, a master's degree from the University of South Florida and a doctorate in philosophy from Florida State University.

"It was about racism," Davis told me. "How could a black man be qualified for this job?"

His tenure was marked by turmoil in part because of policies he implemented, including a tough chase procedure and prohibitions against shorts for officers and cursing. Former officers and police unions even filed dozens of lawsuits against Davis, most of them unsuccessful. He said the bulk of the strife was rooted in resentment and the belief that a black man was unfit for the job.

Attorney James Sheehan, who sued Davis and the department twice on behalf of white police officers, acknowledged years later in the Times that much of Davis' trouble was fueled by race.

"Here comes this strong African-American man who's doing what he believes is the right thing," said Sheehan, who is white. "If Go Davis was a white man and he became police chief, those feelings about him would not have been the same."

I do not know what it will take for so many whites to stop automatically questioning the qualifications of black professionals who are not entertainers or jocks. Perhaps little or nothing can be done. Perhaps this is one enduring reality of race in the United States.

Race and Class: Blacks Still Taking the Hit
— Malik Miah
IT TOOK TEN months before the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) stood up and challenged President Barack Obama. In a surprise move, 10 CBC leaders refused to participate in a key House financial committee vote in December until some more relief is provided to Black businesses.

Black politicians and civil rights leaders have been understandably careful about criticizing the first Black president. Yet facts on the ground, especially the super high unemployment in the Black communities, forced their hand. While their challenge is mild, it is significant.

The impact of the Great Recession has been greatest on Blacks as well as on other ethnic minorities. Official unemployment is nearly 50% higher for African Americans than for whites. What’s most striking is that the Black middle class, including those with Ivy League educations, are having a hard time finding jobs.

The issue of “race” once again is becoming a hot topic in the Black community as qualified professionals and skilled workers with equal or better résumés than whites are being turned down for jobs — going instead to whites with lesser qualifications. It is a reminder of the pre-civil rights era.

At the same time, the gains of the civil rights revolution make it possible for Obama to be president and the Black elite to still hold some major jobs in big business. But there are clear signs of erosion.

One example reported in a front page story in The New York Times entitled, “In Job Hunt, even a college degree can’t close racist gap (December 1, 2009),” notes that many Blacks are altering their names to sound more “white” to get interviews.

A study published in the American Economic Review reports that applicants with Black-sounding names received 50% fewer callbacks than those with white-sounding names.

Getting the interview, of course, doesn’t mean you will be accepted in a tight private sector job market where most interviewers are generally white. (Government jobs are different where enforcement of anti-discrimination policies is stronger and more minorities are employed.) Even if you can get into the door for an interview, it doesn’t mean the most qualified person gets the job. There is little talk about “reverse discrimination” in this environment with double-digit unemployment. For the most part affirmative action in hiring is nonexistent.

One University of Chicago graduate applying for a business money management position in Dallas told the Times of how one hiring manager became excited while talking to him over the phone about how lucky the company was to hear from someone with a top business school education.

But once the company representatives met him and saw that he was Black, “Their eyes kind of hit the ceiling a bit. It was kind of quiet for 45 seconds.” The company’s interest in him quickly cooled.

A Yale University graduate commented, “It does weigh on you in the search because you’re wondering how much is race playing a factor in whether I’m even getting a first call or whether I’m even getting an in-person interview once they hear my voice and they know I’m probably African American?”

De facto Discrimination Lives
As the Dallas example shows, while it is illegal to discriminate, employers know how to avoid hiring Blacks without blatantly or overtly violating the law. Articles are now appearing in major papers and websites about white and Black professionals seeking identical jobs where the more qualified Blacks don’t even get return calls from recruiters. The old maxim, “last hired, first fired” is not applicable since these qualified Blacks can’t even get in the door.

On top of this, the bailout of Wall Street provided few funds for small businesses. Loans and lines of credit are nearly impossible to find. This is doubly true for Black businesses — this is credit redlining.

Some 14 years ago the government began tracking the number of hungry Americans facing what it euphemistically calls “food insecurity.” Today the Department of Agriculture calculates that there are some 49 million Americans — 26% of Black households, 14.6% of white — without enough food. Millions of adults only eat one meal per day and a record number of families rely on food stamps.

The oldest and most respected civil rights group, the NAACP, is now calling on President Obama to take firmer action on the jobs front and the economic recession’s disproportionate impact on Black Americans.

Other Black leaders are also criticizing Obama’s decision to spend billions more for the war in Afghanistan (up to $40 billion per year) while few dollars are going to help the poorest communities save their homes and get jobs. Obama never mentions the special problems facing Black working people.

Racial Reality of Joblessness
The data make clear that race does matter when it comes to joblessness. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in November 2009 unemployment for whites was 9.3%, but 15.6% for Blacks. Overall the unemployment rate was 10% (much higher when those who have given up and the underemployed are added). Long-term unemployment (those persons jobless for 27 weeks or more) continues to increase. It is twice as high for African Americans.

A second statistic also shows the color divide. Black men working at full-time jobs make $622 per week, which is 74.5% of the $835 median for white men.

The unemployment rate among men with college degrees in 2009 is 4.4% for whites, and 8.4% for Blacks. For those with high school diplomas, unemployment is 10% for white men, and 15.9% for Black men. For those with less than a high school degree, it is 13.9% for white and 24.2% for Black men.

The BLS statistics among women are similar — 4% for white women with a college degree compared to 6.9% for Black women. For those with a high school diploma, 7.4% for white women, compared to 11.4% for Black women; and 13% for white women with less than a high school degree compared to 18.3% for Black women.

The BLS statistics are raw data compiled from across the country. The fact that the racial gap is consistent for all social categories indicates that race and racism is structural in society. Accordingly, special measures (enforced by the federal government) are required to help African Americans overcome structural discrimination. These must include affirmative action programs and push back against employers who will find ways to interview but not hire African Americans.

Many Black elected officials in Washington are beginning to see that uncritical support to Obama is not a smart policy. Anger is growing in the Black community. Unemployed African Americans will not get jobs or be trained by “waiting” for the first president who happens to be Black to help them.

Civil rights leaders have been less forceful in these efforts, however, because of a reality that concerns them — the increase in right-wing and racist smears and threats against Obama.

Rise of Hate Groups
There has been a qualitative increase of hate mail and threats directed at President Obama since he took office. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) based in Alabama has reported on the significant rise of the militia movement that is infused with racist ideology. Its report, “The Second Wave: Return of the Militias,” cites the following evidence:

• Fifty new militia training groups, including one composed of current and former police officer and soldiers.

• The convening of so-called “citizen courts” and “grand juries” that have issued indictments against President Obama for treason and fraud.

• “Sovereign citizens” who subscribe to the ideology that whites have a higher citizenship status than others and do not have to pay taxes or obey other laws. They engage in “paper terrorism” such as filing bogus property liens against enemies.

• The introduction of states’ rights resolutions in the legislatures of about three dozen states. The governor of Texas has gone so far to talk about “secession.”

According to its founder Morris Dees, as of the end of 2008 the SPLC documented 926 hate groups in America — a record number and an increase of more than 50% since 2000.

While many of these rightist efforts and militias have existed in the past, what’s new is the reality of the first Black president. Coupled with their hostility to immigrants — legal and undocumented — the smear campaigns of Fox News and the energized extreme right with its racist and other neo-fascist language, create a climate that enables blatant discrimination.

These elements were on vivid display at the well-organized intervention by the conservative base of the Republican Party at the town hall meetings on health care last summer. Many opponents of Obama brought weapons and displays of Nazi and racist images to intimidate officials and those with genuine concerns. On her book tour Sarah Palin’s demagogy, with her direct appeals to not-so-subtle white nationalism, “Obama is not like us,” could not be clearer.

Glenn Beck of Fox News summarized the views of the racist fringe and mainstream neoconservative movement when he said President Obama “has exposed himself over and over and over again as a guy who has a deep-seated hatred of white people or the white culture.” (July 28, 2009)
