Cali has always been about "that sounds dope in my ride" or "that sounds dope at tha function" Kendrick is more of a NY influenced rapper with all tha metaphors etc, but he has a Cali swag/edge to him at tha same time, tha California free thinking/ out tha box/ hippie type culture definitely shows through his music, he appeals to hip hop heads and tha mainstream in that way

NY most popular artist right now French Montana is rappin like a west coast/ south dude....go figure

if this wuz 20 years ago Kendrick would of been labeled a "backpack" rapper on tha west coast along tha lines of underground legends like Hiero, tha Coup, etc

nikkas conveniently forget Nas and Hov. This shyt is aggravating. fukk Montana

Kendrick just lent NY a helping hand, and this is after all them years that NY tried to black ball tha west coast

Kendrick and tha west coast don't need to help NY at this point, tha west coast and south (partly) is running tha scene, outside of Camel NY is irrelevant

this will put tha focus back in East vs West and bring tha East back in tha limelight

NY dudes should be thanking Kendrick honestly not being salty about it
It's still impressive that NY, one city, 5 boroughs, 8 million people. Is compared to the 120 million who lives in the south and the 40 million in Cali.

As far as cities goes
1. Atlanta (bunch)
2. New York (Asap, French, Nas, Jay)
3. La (Tde and Tyler)

regions
1. South (bunch)
2. East (Asap, French, Nas, Jay, Meek, Mac Miller, Wale, Wiz, Nicki)
3. West (Tde, Macklemore and Tyler) OR
3. Midwest (Big Sean, Kanye, Cudi, Eminem, Chief Keef and Lupe).

Not mentioning people like Joey Badass, Asap Ferg, Kid Ink and others without any real buzz.

One could EVEN

When we talk about NY we usually talk about the 5 boroughs.
That's why 50 said he was the hardest in NY and the other hard dudes come from Yonkers.

Ruff Ryders, Puff(even claimed Harlem) and Rakim are the only rappers I know who are not from the city.

But I mean, La vs Ny would not be fair, there are no rappers from La.
La county vs Ny city is what I assume people talk about, similar populations etc. But people say West vs Ny to be able to incporate the bay.

Let's be reality here. Kendrick didn't drop the names OF ANY NY rappers in the "challenge" portion of the song. The NY rappers he DID name were the ones he paid the ultimate respect towards (Jay-Z and Nas) so it's not like this was a great big wake up call for New York if you take out the King Of NY boast. In my opinion the king of NY line was two fold. It was a compliment and a diss. The only two rappers in the past 15 years who have a legitimate claim to the King Of NY crown are the two rappers Kendrick aligned himself with (Esco and Hov) so Kendrick isn't really saying anything "new" in that regards or even "shocking". NY rappers have needed to step up their games for YEARS. Kendrick is essence saying that he's King Of NY because he's carrying on the legacy's of the city's two biggest Hip Hop icons.
