At the end of the day i is #3 on iTunes right now, which means it'll likely be a top 30 hit on the Billboard chart soon. If this was a case of Kendrick releasing a track that bombed sure, I'd buy the argument that this was some mis-step.

It's a promo single. Like...The Recipe. The difference being that this is clearly a pop single.

Dr. Dre's only released two singles ("Kush" and "I Need A Doctor"). The difference between everything else that was leaked or "released" and Kendrick's new song is that they weren't full songs. Some of them didn't even have a hook and others still had the reference verses. If he was really "testing the waters", he wouldn't have made "I Need A Doctor" an official record and spent money on that video or performed the song at the Grammys. That song got much more of a negative feedback than Kendrick's.

They aren't testing the waters. They put out a song to create a buzz and get people talking. "The Recipe" was the first song we got from Kendrick's debut and it ended up being a bonus track.
