Kendrick sells only 286k first week….Flop?

crazy how Drake, Beyonce and Kendrick all dropped albums, and they literally came and went.

Beyeonce is #3 on Billboard, at 74k.

Don't know how that is "literally came and went".

Explain. It certainly under performed but when I think about what I assumed the album would do, it was basically 300-350k first week followed by a weekly decline similar to Future's album. He barely missed 300k first week and isn't far below Future's weekly trajectory despite not having one hit. Without a hit.

I'd also say this is not the album people expected sonically. I'm not even I can compare it to following up GKMC with TPAB, because the are (multiple) radio or mainstream songs on this album whereas TPAB didn't have any radio attempts. They're just not that good compared to similar stuff on DAMN or the big mainstream albums of this year (Future especially). Coming back after 5 years without a "ok that's THAT song" type track was disappointing. Interestingly I just saw an interview where one of the producers (Sounwave) said when they were making N95 with Bo1da they thought that was the "oh shyt Kendrick's back" track. The song went plat and is obviously popular with much of his fanbase, it's a banger live etc but...I can't really fukk with it that much. The obvious comparison is DNA which is ten times better right? It just feels kind of corny and hard to sneak into a playlist or the car if you got people with you.

I like the album overall, not shytting on it. Doubt it'll be in my personal top 10 this year, whereas Future will be.

I can't refute that, it's not the album or success I would have expected. At the same time if I'm the label I'm looking at a DAMN tour that grossed 62mil, with the Big Steppers tour likely on pace to end up around 70-80mil. With no hits.

It's been on the Billboard 200 for a decade, longer than any rap album. Part of it this year is vinyl sales which have been super impressive but the main thing is streams. People are listening to the hits and bangers. That's the shyt that keeps albums on the charts. Him, Drake, and Cole keep releasing albums that last a long ass time on charts due to that.

Nah I meant the recent bump to get in into the top 20 again might be due to the recent re-release. GKMC was the soundtrack to alot of people's lives at the time.

Cole, Kendrick and Drake are some of the last mainstream artists that will last beyond their generation in my opinion. These new cats don't have the depth.

Every album takes a different approach when it comes to that. Thematically, you could compare songs on this album to songs he's made in the past, but not sonically. What makes Kendrick so great is that you never know what you're going to get from him. It's one thing to just not like the album on its own merits, but to not like the album because it wasn't the album you wanted in your own mind is when the problem starts.

I understand why Eminem does surprise albums now because he doesn't want people's expectations influencing how they listen to something. I don't agree with him when he talks about Revival and how people reacted to it because it was a genuinely bad album. The negative reaction to the track list leaking would have been proven wrong if the album was good. It wasn't. But I see why he feels like certain people just go into an album and judge it through their lens, instead of just judging the music that's there.

What makes Kendrick so great is that you never know what you're going to get from him. It's one thing to just not like the album on its own merits, but to not like the album because it wasn't the album you wanted in your own mind is when the problem starts.

All his albums have sounded different but I def feel like this one had a clear regression on lyrics, flow and rapping. There's some great writing on the album in places, but other places I was left baffled at some of the weak mainstream attempts. N95 sounds corny to me, especially the second verse with the voice change. It felt like it was supposed to be the DNA type track on here but you can play DNA in the whip, in the club, etc.

There's also this weird, Kanye-esque troll or "post-rap" type shyt that is very hit or miss. Before this album think about like...Future's verse on King's Dead, or Kanye's verse on That Part by Q. These memorably corny parts of songs that end up becoming incredibly catchy, become quotable, go viral, and are popular live. There was a lot of that on Keem's album. Top 'o the morning. Most of Range Brothers. On the album this led to stuff that works ("bytch I'm attractive") and other things that are mixed "push these nikkas off like..." and his verses on Silent Hill). You can tell that's Keem's influence and it's just not...wavy to me. It's kind of corny.

Then finally I don't fukk with having Kodak all over an album that culminates in a story about the damage sexual assault does to men and women. Or the more conceptual songs that aren't enjoyable. I "like" We Cry Together but have no real interest in hearing it again. Same with Auntie's Diaries, and even Mother I Sober. Some will say because they're too heavy but...I don't think that's it. Mother I Sober is a great song but going back to the Kodak thing...the ending kind of falls flat.

Not a bad album but incredibly flawed to me. And jarring because I legit didn't think Kendrick had dropped a "bad" song since Section80 (No Makeup).
